Hello Instagram! My names Joseph Duerr, a Los Angeles based cinematographer born and raised in Venice Beach. I urge you to check out my current website in the link of my profile page and want you to consider hiring me for your next project, whether it’s as simple as a two camera interview, or directing and shooting your feature film. Over the last couple years, I’ve spent a lot of time swimming massive waves with a camera and gained experience working with teams on bigger sets outside of the water. I’ve worked alongside valuable mentors, and now have formulated a team of people I trust and love to work with. Moving forward I’m interested in meeting new people that are great at what they do, want to work together, and inspire me to do better. @southbaymoments once told me “If you can surf South Bay waves, you can surf anything.” The word “closeout” is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of South Bay. Soupy, hollow, square closeouts. I’d like to think that learning how to navigate these challenging conditions cements a solid foundation for any wave rider that calls South Bay home. Hopefully this flat spell ends soon and we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming - long paddle outs, steep drops into block long closeouts with the occasional doggy door exit. Some funky ones at home and abroad over the years.

It’s difficult to express Mike’s @mike.geib impact on this small South Bay surfing community in words. Sometimes, photos do more justice. While standing in this circle, listening to those who knew him best…he was described as a genius, a mentor, and a father figure, and was “too damn smart to be just a shaper.” The paddle out in his memory was a powerful reminder of the love and respect this community had for him. Mike’s passion for surfing was evident through the thousands of boards he shaped over the last 40 years each one a testament to his skill and dedication, from shaping bays with Dewey-Weber @deweywebersurf to @tylersurfboards and, of course, his own Cigar of the Pharaohs. One friend eloquently said that a shaper is a “medium” for a surfer’s relationship with the ocean, and that truly resonated with everyone who knew Mike. He had an intuitive way of understanding a surfer’s needs, always able to recommend the perfect board. He was not just a shaper, but a mentor and a beloved member of the community. Although I only knew Mike for the last few years, his presence at the Pier was a constant. The tribute to him was both beautiful and fitting, a true reflection of the impact he had on everyone around him. When you see a surfboard with his logo out in the water or in “the lot,” you know it was crafted with heart and soul by one of the most respected shapers in the South Bay. Thank you @surfmartian for connecting me to Mike.
