This past weekend, my oldest son coached his first game in his new role as the offensive line coach for a college football team. It’s a big step for him. He’s worked hard for this moment. The long hours as a graduate assistant, the missed events, and all the unglamorous parts of building a career in college football. There isn’t much work-life balance during football season. It’s pretty much all work. So when two of his college buddies surprised him at his first game, it got me. They each drove more than three hours from different directions just to be there for Coach Kooper. These are busy guys. Jobs. Wives. Kids. Responsibilities. Full lives of their own. And still, they made the drive. As parents, there are certain things we quietly hope and pray our children will find as they make their way through life. Good people are near the top of that list. People who show up. People who celebrate them. People who say, “This matters to you, so it matters to me.” Maybe we appreciate this differently once our kids are grown. We can’t always be there anymore. So there is something incredibly comforting about seeing that they have found people who love them well. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve become more grateful for the people they have chosen—and the people who have chosen them back. Their friends. Their teammates. Their coworkers. The people who become family along the way. Because the older I get, the more certain I am that the stuff doesn’t matter all that much. But the people who answer the phone. The people who sit beside you when life is hard. The people who drive three hours just to sit in the stands and say, “We are here.” That is what makes life rich. Maybe one of the unexpected gifts of raising adult children is realizing we are no longer the only ones loving them fiercely. They have built a strong village of their own. And perhaps that is one of the greatest answers to a mother’s prayer: To know that as their world gets bigger, their circle grows with it. Filled with people who show up. Who love them well. Last week my husband grabbed his whistle, found his clipboard, and inhaled throat drops. Just like that, football season was back. He coaches the offensive line. The big guys whose job is to make everyone else look good. They are the protectors. The ones who sacrifice individual glory so someone else can shine. They understand teamwork at its purest, and work their tails off for the good of the people around them. They are the unsung heroes. Offensive linemen are the blue-collar dads of every football team— a team within a team. They rarely hear their names announced. They don’t score touchdowns, don’t make the highlight reels and won’t be found on a cereal box. They do the blocking so everyone else can do the scoring. I’ve been around offensive linemen for more years than I can count. They’re some of the smartest, funniest, most adaptable athletes you’ll meet. They know their role, and they embrace it. They understand that their value isn’t measured by headlines or trophies. It’s found in the strength of the unit they help build. It made me think about the world we live in. We are surrounded by messages that tell us to build our brand, grow our following, chase recognition, and ask, What’s in it for me? But maybe what our families, friendships, workplaces, and communities need most are more offensive linemen. People who protect the people they care about. People who make others better. People who celebrate someone else’s success as if it were their own. People who quietly carry the weight when no one’s watching. People who show up every day, do the work, and understand that not everything valuable gets applause. People who understand life isn’t an individual sport. So this football season, BE an offensive lineman. Protect your people. Work for the good of others. Measure your success not by how much attention you receive, but by how many people are better because you were standing beside them. The world has enough people chasing the spotlight. What it needs are more people willing to do the blocking. Because the strongest teams are built by people who care more about the mission than the applause. 💛💛💛 THERAMOM.COM

Instead of giving a traditional best man speech, Kaden wrote a poem for Kooper’s wedding. A few people have asked if they could hear it again, so I thought I’d share it here. It captures their relationship perfectly—funny, supportive, full of playful jabs at each other, but underneath it all, nothing but love. I’m so proud of Kaden for pouring his heart into writing something so meaningful and reflective of brotherly love. It was the perfect tribute for the perfect day. My son got married this weekend. It was a two-day celebration filled with fun, laughter, old friends, family, dancing, and love. So much love. Love for who they were as little ones. Love for who they are now. And love for who they are still becoming. It is almost impossible to describe because it fills places in your heart you did not even know existed. It is the quiet letting go of something while taking in something new and beautiful. Watching their first dance felt magical. In that moment, I did not feel like I was losing a son—our family simply expanded as we welcomed his wife into our circle. She is one of us now. Fully. Because if he chooses her, so do we. His heart now belongs to her, and truly, that is what I have always prayed for. God answered my prayers. Then he and I shared our dance. It felt like a beautiful handoff—honoring the love that helped raise him while celebrating the love that will walk beside him in this next chapter. He chose “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. At first, I was surprised. I did not know the song well, so I began listening to it on repeat. And then I understood. It is a mother’s hope for her son: that he stays true to himself, remains humble, finds joy in what matters most, and grows into a good man. I will remember that dance forever. It now sits deep in my heart beside the days my children were born, the last moment I shared with my dad, and the day I married my husband 31 years ago. Life really does come full circle. There is something profoundly tender about realizing the little boy you once held so tightly has grown into a man capable of loving someone deeply, choosing someone fully, and building a life beyond the one you gave him. That is the goal, I suppose. Not to keep them close forever, but to raise them with enough love, steadiness, and faith that they can create a beautiful life of their own. So be a simple man, my precious son. Love her deeply. Live with integrity. Stay kind. Stay humble. No matter where life takes you, there will always be a place in my heart that belongs only to you.
