There always gonna be another mountain.

Cool people. Cool places

Sat down with @koricuthbert @hiveclimbingwpg to talk about what it takes to start a climbing gym. Middle of Covid, rent due, millions of dollars in debt, all to make a dream come true.

You gotta respect it 🫡

Kori talks about what climbing Everest actually looks like today, how the Alpine Club of Canada fits into the culture of serious mountaineering, and the trade-offs that come with modern expeditions. Access, safety, commercialization and risk are all part of the conversation when the mountain isn’t the same as it used to be.

Kori talks about traveling to other climbing gyms to see what worked, what didn’t, and what was missing. Instead of copying anyone else, he focused on building a space that felt intentional and different, from the floors to the walls, every detail at The Hive was designed with climbers in mind.

Opening The Hive meant betting everything. Kori talks about going a million dollars into debt, preparing to open just as the world shut down, and what it took to keep going when the odds were stacked against him.

Speed climbing looks simple until you try it. Kori talks about why it made the Olympics, how no two climbs ever feel the same, and the moment he realized how much precision, timing, and raw power it actually demands.

Climbing isn’t one thing. Kori explains how trad, sport, bouldering, and free climbing all ask something different from you, mentally and physically. It’s about trust, movement, risk, and how you choose to solve the wall in front of you.

Climbing isn’t just about strength, it’s about problem-solving, trust, and knowing when to push and when to step back. Kori Cuthbert shares what led him to build The Hive Climbing Gym, the risks he took to bring it to life, and the lessons learned from both the mountains and entrepreneurship.

Building something meaningful doesn’t always start with a perfect plan. For Kori Cuthbert, it started with a belief that fitness could feel different, more communal, more intentional, and more human.

From taking real risks to creating a space where people feel challenged and supported, this conversation pulls back the curtain on what it took to build The Hive Climbing Gym in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg did not make December marathon training easy.

High mileage in one of the coldest cities on earth can be a lot.

Dark mornings, frozen sidewalks, so many layers, and a lot of talking myself through the boredom.

A few stats from the month:
• I ran my biggest month @ 435 km.
• I ran my biggest week @ 130 km.
• I ran faster than my marathon goal pace for 30 minutes.

This month wasn’t easy, it was really hard. If I get to my goals next year, I’ll remember how far they felt in December.

December reinforced that if you can train here, you can train anywhere

January is up next and the days only get longer from here.
