Stan Zenkov was featured on WFMU’s ‘Music for a Free World’ with Dave Sewelson earlier this month. It’s a great overview of Stan’s music with a focus on his latest collaboration ‘The Mechanics of Getting Anywhere’ with guitarist Keenan Ruffin.

In addition to the interviews there’s even a live improv between Stan (on bass clarinet) and host Dave Sewelson (baritone sax). You can listen to the archived show here:

🔊 NEW RELEASE OUT TODAY:

“The Mechanics of Getting Anywhere” celebrates the creative process in improvised duos from Stan Zenkov (bass clarinet, alto sax, clarinet) and Keenan Ruffin (electric guitar and pedals). Recorded live to stereo, they capture the ideas they explored performing sets together. With only two voices, each is clear to follow in the mix with the interactions less tethered and the music more abstract.

In honest dialogue guided by their ears, emotions, and subconscious chance, the music is both cerebral and instinctual. Stan’s bass clarinet shifts from the sublime to the possessed, pairing extended techniques with Keenan’s guitar sustains. The guitar fills multiple roles in the pair switching between rhythmic ‘bass’ runs, complex chordal resonances, and even more textual territory with the use of effects on the b-side.

The cover artwork (‘Rabble II’ by Matt Murphy @7mrm8 ) follows similar themes while visualizing its own creative process in an abstraction reminiscent of atomic particles or the physics of orbiting planets, calling out the similarities across the different scales.

The album is available on cassette or digital from Moon Villain:

This one earns the title track with a great overview of the two players’ complimentary styles, as lyrical runs dart and build to brief resolutions, only to start again in a tireless exchange of creative ideas.

The full album will be released Friday November 7th on Moon Villain

After playing together in various groups in the New York free jazz scene, guitarist Keenan Ruffin and multi-reedist Stan Zenkov teamed up to record their first full length album as a duo ‘The Mechanics of Getting Anywhere’. The release will be available on cassette and digital on November 7th via Moon Villain.

This is Stan’s second duo album on the label after 2020’s ‘Untangling the Ghost’ with John Thayer. This time paired with Keenan’s harmonically complex guitar work, the music is energized with tonal interplay; breathing in a balanced conversation that is inventive, playful, and heartfelt.

This video clip is from their set at Dada Bar back in June (longer excerpt is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hMQPJf39lI)
