For many tourists, especially those from Singapore and Malaysia, Batam, Indonesia has long been seen as the perfect short getaway. Just an hour away by ferry, the city offers affordable indulgences: spa treatments, massages, mani-pedis, and endless food spots, made even more attractive by the favorable currency exchange.

For years, however, Batam also carried a certain stigma. It was often labeled as a “gentlemen’s playground”, a city associated with vice, where nightlife, drugs, sex, and dugem culture openly existed. A reputation that shaped how outsiders viewed the island for decades.

But beyond those stereotypes, Batam has quietly evolved into a city with far more depth and character than most people realize. Today, the island is home to a growing creative culture spanning culinary gems, independent fashion, art spaces, and kustom kulture communities that continue to thrive beneath the radar.

While these scenes rarely get attention outside the city, we want to shine a light on the places where locals actually hang out, connect, and build culture together. Forget the usual Nagoya Hill itinerary or overpriced seafood restaurants, this is a different side of Batam that you would might not want to miss in your next trip.
