my dream room, you will live forever
11
To me, people that live with pride in their identity, interests, and values, shine so brightly that you have to cover your eyes to look at them straight on. In the past, it made me envious, reminded me of dreams I ignored and tucked away at the back of my mind.

Those who wear what they want, love who they want, like what they want, felt like people I couldn’t quite relate to. How did they do that? How did they… live so freely? What made them so different from me?

I pondered that all my life, and I realized that this confidence had to stem from within. When you believe in yourself, believe you are worth taking risks for, you begin to lead the life you want.

Changes bring new experiences, and experiences foster growth. Along the way, you learn more about yourself, define your own identity, and foster your sense of innate worth. But if you never take that step forward, you stay stagnant, and you continue to live burdened with regrets. It builds and builds until one day, you wake up and realize you’ve wasted your whole life chasing comfortability because fear held you back for years, decades even.

So I urge you to take that step and make that change, little by little, because one day you’ll wake up and feel that same regret creep up on you, like I did.

I wish I gave more compliments to strangers.
I wish I stayed in touch with old friends.
I wish I tried harder to make new friends.
I wish I tried harder to chase my dreams.
I wish I showed more affection.
I wish I expressed more gratitude.
I wish I was more positive.

Those are the thoughts that keep me up at night. But to love others, you need to first have enough love for yourself.

And you know what? As long as you’re alive, you still have time to lead the life you want. So start that hobby, wear that dress, cut your hair short, confess your feelings, laugh, cry, make mistakes, learn, and do all the things you know you’d regret if you never took a chance on yourself.

Today, I turn 21. Growing older is scary. It really is. But it’s only a reminder that time keeps turning, so let’s keep trying to make the most of it.

This year too, let’s all try our best to live happily and without regrets.
