A few days ago I came home from my first artist residency @bethanyartsorg which was one of the most productive, joyful, nourishing, and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had, within the artistic context and outside of it. Investing in arts and culture work is critical, I knew that already, but being on the receiving end of that was one of the best experiences. I’ve never had the opportunity to devote so much undivided energy to my art. And I was genuinely surprised with the output. This project’s working title is “The Value of Time”, and although I have much more l I’d like to do before finishing it, I’m so happy with the work so far. As you move from left to right, it will be annotated with timestamps and a supplemental formula that will calculate how much one hour’s worth of this drawing should cost. Once I finish it I’ll get into the details a bit more, but I’m excited to share it even in this working phase. This is the first project in an ongoing series examining the relationship between addiction and capitalism. This is a little over 60 hours of drawing by me. First picture is my favorite section so far, second picture are my fellow residents helping me see the whole thing for the first time, the following pictures are the actual sections of the drawing from left to right. Last week, TORCHES continued with a conversation with the award winning theatre director and performance artist Niegel Smith.⁠ ⁠ Niegel Smith is a Bessie Award winning theatre director and performance artist. He is the artistic director of NYC’s Obie Award winning theatre, The Flea, guiding the organization through its refounding as a hub for experimental art by Black, brown and queer artists.
