This one’s for the ladies in honor of Women’s Equality Day.

Think about the women who introduced you to your people.

Not the one you met once, the ones who kept showing up. Who said your name in a room before you’d earned it. Who made the second invitation happen after the first one felt like luck.

Most of what holds a community together isn’t visible until you go looking for it.

In 1912, eight years before the rest of the country caught up, Arizona women won the right to vote. The Arizona suffrage win passed by nearly two-thirds of the vote. The largest margin of any state suffrage win in the country, and it stunned the national suffrage movement, who’d barely campaigned there.

This didn’t happen in one moment, but door by door, through a summer of heat, one neighbor convincing the next. The win may have looked sudden from the outside. It wasn’t. It was built the way trust always is: person to person, long before anyone was counting.

The relationship building underneath the outcome, that’s the part we spend our time on.

We also want to recognize Sandra Day O’Connor, who grew up on a cattle ranch in Duncan, AZ and decided to pursue law. Armed with a law degree and the grit learned on her family’s cattle ranch she earned the respect of her peers to become the Arizona State Senate Majority Leader. And her leadership in that role ultimately earned her the seat on the United States Supreme Court as the first woman to serve at this level.

And to honor another champion we can’t not mention one Ms. Dolly Parton, rest in peace, who spent 60 years quietly building one of the most far reaching pieces of infrastructure in the country- a library that puts books in millions of kids, hands who might never know her name.

Plenty of women who taught us this aren’t pictured here. Friends, colleagues, collaborators, all the same story. This one’s for them too.

Now it’s your turn. Who introduced you to your people?
