“Farewell.” It’s one of those phrases we speak when we have to part from people after we’ve spent time together. Ultimately, all good meetings must end. All parties separate back to their individual lives and we walk through our day to day until we can inevitably meet again. I first met Brian Coleman,( I’ll forever fondly refer to him as Coach B) when I was a 12 year old, he was one of the first coaches that noticed my potential, he mentored me in all the ways he could. His basketball acumen was elite, and he had a method of simplifying instructions that turned reps into reflex. Simultaneously he was equally as influential off the court, in life he was more than a mentor, he was a friend. He was one of the first people I looked up to. There are several reasons I aspire to be a great man. I want to be someone who is revered by the people, to create a legacy that is synonymous with doing good for others, and being instrumental in the shaping of future generations. Coach B was my first flesh and blood example of that goal. He was the best role model for a teen to be around. His ear for music had already made him a legend at a young age. He was in rooms with icons and superstars where he held his own but never lost himself in life’s pageantry. He had presence and swag and he spoke with confidence and righteous thought. He was a real man! B was with me through my life’s hardest trials and greatest triumphs. He cheered my success and praised my growth, he fed my soul with his wisdom. I am greater due in part to the small time I’ve been in his company. 17 years. For 17 short years he was my mentor when I needed to learn, my coach when I needed to be shown, my friend when I needed to be heard, my father when I needed the hard truths, and my brother in my heart always. I am sad for the countless years we don’t get to share together, but I am forever thankful for the short 17 you left me with. So to my brother I say one final time “Farewell” it’s only a matter of time until we meet again. #NoWordsLeftUnsaid #PlayHardPlaySmartPlayTogether
