In 1973, Eintracht Braunschweig became the first football club to put a sponsor on its shirt. What started as a clever commercial innovation to keep a struggling team afloat slowly became the norm. Today, the modern football jersey is as much advertising space as sporting uniform. Every match is a war of the billboards. Not everybody was on the wave though. Barcelona held out. For more than a century, the front of their shirt was considered too sacred to sell. When they finally put a logo there, it was UNICEF’s—a genius inversion of the format. Where other clubs were paid to carry brands on their chests, Barcelona gave that space to a cause they themselves supported financially. Later, even that space became commercial. UN/UNTD lives in that contradiction. We aren’t against commerce. Football doesn’t exist at its current scale without it. Commercial partnerships attract the world’s best players, fund clubs, build stadiums, subsidize broadcasts, and help turn a local game into a global one. But somewhere along the way, the shirt became so good at telling us who paid for it that it started saying less about why we love it. This is us trying to make room for that again while acknowledging the messiness of it all. Propter Amorem Ludi. For the love of the game.

Bad news: You’re a neutralista. Good news: we made the uniform. Hit link in bio.

Congrats, you’re a neutralista now. Now you can support one team in the first half. And the opposing team in the second. Sounds like a worthy compromise. Shop the neutralista jerseys for your new viewing experience. Link in bio.

Been watching Jerseychella, aka the World Cup, and it confirmed something for me: The football jersey might be one of the most charged garments in modern culture. It can signal allegiance to a club, country, city, family, or inherited identity. It carries heritage: something passed down and protected. It is streetwear, status symbol, player cosplay, tribal uniform, collector’s object, and—more and more—a walking billboard for betting companies, airlines, states, crypto, and oil money. A jersey can make identity legible. But it can also flatten it. What do you wear when you’re an American-born Brit with Nigerian heritage? Or a Dutch-born Moroccan with a French father? Somehow, all of that can get in the way of the actual football. UN/UNTD asks what is left when you strip the shirt back to the game—or whether that is even possible. A jersey for people loyal to football, not necessarily the badge. Limited quantities. Link in bio. #football #soccer #worldcup2026

This brunch crew helping me celebrate another year 🥞🍳🥓 “It doesn’t have to be on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t have to be by the time you turn eighteen or thirty-three or fifty-nine. It doesn’t have to conform to whatever is usual. It just has to be. In time. In place. In spirit. It just has to be.” -David Levithan
