THE NEW ORDER ISSUE

Year after year, The Gawad Buhay Awards stood not simply as a celebration of outstanding productions and performances but a snapshot of where Philippine theater stands. In it’s 16th year’s theme, “Tuloy ang Kwento”, the ceremony honored artistic excellence while pointing toward a larger narrative unfolding across the performing arts industry. One of stability, growth, and renewed momentum.

Philstage Vice President and @petatheater Executive Director Anj Heruela offered a hopeful assessment of the industry’s current state. More productions are being staged across the country, but audiences are growing alongside them. Rather than competing for a shrinking pool of theatergoers, productions are seeing demand rise at a pace that keeps up with the expanding number of shows. The data, she explained, suggests a healthier and more balanced performing arts ecosystem, where growth is becoming increasingly sustainable.

In many ways, the 16th Gawad Buhay Awards became a measure of an industry that is no longer defined primarily by recovery. The conversation has begun shifting toward sustainability. More productions are being mounted, audiences are responding, and theater companies are continuing to take creative risks across original works, adaptations, musicals, and contemporary Filipino stories.

That is perhaps the deeper meaning of “Tuloy ang Kwento”.

It is both a theme and a quiet declaration. Philippine theater is continuing its story, not by returning to what it once was, but by building what it can become. The awards recognized the achievements of a single theater season, but they also pointed toward something more enduring: a performing arts community that continues to grow despite challenges, producing work that remains ambitious, collaborative, and deeply connected to Filipino audiences.

“And the Gawad goes thruuuu…”

I wasn’t lying when I said I was just so happy to be there. My last (and only) nomination for a performance was for The Normal Heart back in 2015 and this year’s recognition was as sweet as it already could’ve gotten. Im so glad may videos so I was able to replay this crazy moment. I also got the biggest hugs from Alfredo and Marvin after the speech and my god you guys are the best 💙 We were rooting for each other.

Thank you, Gawad Jury! Still 🤯

The first pic is of my two trophies and I’ve got them proudly on my shelf. Only 20 more Gawads to go to tie with Marco Viaña.

The rest are a collection of memories and messages.

Guys, you wanna know what might be better than believing in yourself? Having friends who believe in you way more than you do. From the Shrek press con, to the rehearsals and then opening night, my friends kept telling me to prepare a speech. I just wanted to have a blast… but they were right (most especially GA Fallarme) 💙

If you make it to the last slide, you will see that my inspiration for Donkey’s “Mmmmmmkay” actually came from Gab Pangilinan (the script only says “ok”). Wanted to acknowledge para hindi naman sayang yung pagka-whiplash niya during the ceremony 😂

The production was nominated for 14 awards including Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Musical. Marynor Madamesila won Female Lead Performance in a Musical as Daisy Hilton.

The 16th #GawadBuhayAwards was nothing short of a warm embrace to our ever growing Philippine theatre community. 🏆🎭❤️

Truly an honor to witness show-stopping performances from all the amazing shows that took place this last season, especially our #SandboxSideShow family with “Come Look at the Freaks!” How I missed performing with you, and all the laughter and warmth we continue to share! I love you! “How do you sleep?!” 🎪

Performing on stage with dear friends and the past, present, and future of our community was an honor. Also, I’m deeply humbled to have joined @balletmanila, @rony_fortich, and dear @pamelaimperial as we paid tribute to our loved ones who left the stage too soon.

Thank you, @lovephilstage @thesandboxco @stagestalents and Direk @paolovalenciano for this gracious opportunity to give back!

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners! We’re all inspired to create and tell stories even more going into the next season because of you! Praying even more regions and categories get to open up for even more artists in our country to be recognized for their artistry in the future.

I’m also overwhelmed with happiness that my family from Seattle, including the @filipinocommunityofseattle, was able to attend! Thank you! And thank you for supporting since I was a baby. 🥹
