When I was 14 I left my high school 2 weeks before the semester was over. My anxiety was at an all-time high and the fear of failure caused by learning disabilities haunted me. Striving was all I ever knew in school and in life in general. In my childhood and adolescence, I felt embarrassed and looked down on by classmates and teachers. School was just one of the many areas I felt inadequate in. It has only been recently that I’ve realized how much my educational journey has affected me and the many ways I have found myself overcompensating and striving to prove myself. School only ever brought me shame, and I wasn’t considered “college material”. But things change, help can be received, and healing can happen. When I was 14, leaving my classmates and school to be homeschooled, I was broken and miserable. I felt defeated, stupid, and worthless. But today, I’m not 14, I’m 21 and I am the first woman to graduate college in my entire family. If I could tell a few things to that broken 14 year old it would be that you are able. Your performance has never and will never be what defines you. Your ability has never been and never will be what makes you lovable and worthy. You are lovable, able, and worthy because Jesus made you lovable, able and worthy. Thank you to my parents who gracefully support me though it all, the teachers who were patient and kind towards me and glory to God, who was constantly fighting for me to flourish.
