Running out of room in your shop?

@ksprecisionmetals sent me this custom metal display rack and I had ZERO space for it so I built a simple shelf to turn wasted space into storage.

Sometimes you don’t need more space you just need to use it better.

Save this idea for your own!

I designed and fabricated this mini-sculpture to fulfill an assignment in a jewelry-making course that I attended at @occollege , near where I live in Michigan.

One of the requirements was to only use non ferrous metals. I found that thin gauge brass and copper can be easily cut and etched on my 60 watt fiber laser.

This short video omits several production steps:
- I used copper tubular rivets and brass tubing to connect and space the wing layers.
- The insect’s body was turned on my lathe, and the head was milled.
- A green patina was applied to the lower layer for some extra color effect in the recessed areas.

The metal sheets and tubing were supplied by @ksprecisionmetals . If you’ve never seen their products, you should check them out. (Icepick provided by @jimmydiresta . 😎)

My proudest work yet. THIS is the kind of work I aspire to do.

I was comissioned to make this late 1800's gambler's chest styled poker set as a surprise birthday gift for a dear friend. While the chest itself is no new task for me, many of the details were a first and something new to learn especially making these one of a kind poker chips.

The chest features a continuous grain curly walnut exterior and lid made entirely of the same piece of wood. Each side panel features holly string inlay. As well as a holly and ebony image of three playing cards on the top of the box. The mitered corners are reinforced with hidden splines, and the individual trays feature brass exposed splines as well as matching brass hardware all around.

As you open the lid you are presented with 2 decks of cards and the one off brass and wood poker chips. The second tray down holds more brass poker chips as well as a green flocked center for storing personal items or rolling dice. At the bottom of the chest, you are presented with a gold flask, and four scotch glasses.

The chest's unique set of three hundred brass cored wood veneered poker chips, 50 sets of 6 naturally different colored/grained veneers, is an incredibly unique feature not seen anywhere else. Through the many things I had to learn this project, this was one of the most daunting and the one task that had no way of knowing if I was doing it right or not. There were many failures in this process before reaching success. You go to school on the first one for sure... but we prevailed with the seriously sweet brass edged wooden chips to compliment the wood and brass hardware of the chest.

I hand delivered this chest to North Carolina from upstate New York because I did not trust anyone else with it!! 1,200 miles later, I'm home and thankful for the opportunity to learn, visit my friend, and have what I think is my coolest portfolio piece to date.

Thank you @Keriedixon and happy birthday @Makana

Special thanks to @blackthornconcepts 📸 and @Jimmydiresta for letting me use his @onefinitycnc all week to make the poker chips
