Die Workshopreihe „Vom Glück etwas selbst zu machen“ geht in die zweite Runde! Im Herbst legen wir den Fokus nochmal auf’s Weben, Binden und Flechten. Over the weekend I had the pleasure to visit with @sunhousecraft in Berea Kentucky who was hosting an event, a sort of broom in with broom makers from across the USA and more. Broom sweeps were once a thing where broom makers would meet up and learn new techniques and styles from each other. Gathered there in Berea were beginners, seasoned makers and experienced professionals. Cynthia and Doug of Sunhouse Craft had gathered top tier instructors ( @kthrina.berger taught a brush class, @hearthcraftbrooms taught making a rooster whisk, and @house_of_figs_studio taught a broom class) to participants in morning sessions. Berea is home to Berea college that teaches many Appalachian crafts, I even got to meet the talented @pleasesendword who is the director of broomcraft at the college (she is an extremely talented broom maker) then everyone spent their afternoon helping bring in Sunhouse Craft’s broom corn harvest (but more on that later) this was the second such event I attended in Berea, I believe it was her third year doing this and each year it’s growing. It’s time for the HARVEST PARTY! September 14-15!!! This year, our harvest party has grown to include multiple instructors! @hearthcraftbrooms is teaching braided whisks and besoms, @kthrina.berger is teaching stitched wooden brushes @villagehandcraft is teaching woodworking for broommakers @house_of_figs_studio is teaching Appalachian style full sweeps and I am teaching tools for the long haul ! Katie Startzman @nightjarberea is making food for everyone this year, so come learn with your favorite broom and brush instructors from around the world, join us for a leisurely lunch at the farm, then learn about and bring in our organic broomcorn harvest in the afternoon! Primitive camping is welcome, as are supervised children. Want to just help us harvest for the afternoon? Join us for lunch at no cost, then help us bring in the harvest! Link in bio! Giving thanks. There is a loong laundry list of people to thank for making this weekend possible: from @hearthcraftbrooms @kthrina.berger and @house_of_figs_studio leaving their respective homes and traveling far to come and share their knowledge with everyone!- there are each and every student and harvester who gave us their weekend on a hot hot set of days to help- we will tag all of you in the photos we will have soon from @christinastallardphoto ( thank you Christina!) . None of this research and learning (and broomcorn!) would be possible without @lazyeightstockfarm of course, but today, while I’m returning dishes to @nightjarberea tools to @growappalachia, chairs to @bereaartscouncil ( that has the most amazing show up right now!) we’re feeling the community love that really makes this place special. We’re not able to do this alone, but it’s amazing what we are creating together. A profound sense of thanks is coming over me with each goodbye to new and old friends, and each return of borrowed things. I truly had the best time this weekend, and am left feeling energized and inspired: with new friends, new skills, and a stronger sense of community: hit us up when we can lend a hand, we’re thankful to be here.
