POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Earlier this spring, SSNAP artist-in-residence Kuhlein Migue @kuhlein.migue visited Kate Richer’s Grade 6/7 class at Fulford Elementary School for a two-part workshop inspired by her artistic practice.

Students began by creating drawings using markers and personal objects brought from home. In the second session, they transformed those drawings into woven works by cutting and interlacing strips of paper, exploring pattern, memory, and transformation through hands-on making.

Drawing from themes central to her own work, Kuhlein encouraged students to consider how everyday objects can carry stories, connections, and personal meaning.

Thank you to Kuhlein, Kate Richer, and the students of Fulford Elementary for a thoughtful and creative collaboration.

Artist Spotlight: Kuhlein Migue
@kuhlein.migue

Untitled works in progress

SSNAP 2025/26 Residency Award recipient Kuhlein Migue reflects on her upcoming residency and the role of memory, place, and process in her work.

Drawing from her experience growing up in the Philippines, her paintings reconstruct landscapes through memory, filtered, reimagined, and shaped by lived experience. Working with oil paint and handmade paper, she explores themes of land, labour, and history, often referencing colonial imagery while pushing toward more abstract forms.

With her first residency ahead on Salt Spring Island, Kuhlein looks forward to new connections, new ideas, and the space to experiment and take creative risks.

“Take good photos of your work, be confident about your submission, and don’t overthink it.”

Where do the Birds Go to Die? on display as apart of the group show: Land, Labour, Leaving at Treaty Space Gallery, Halifax. NS.

Through photography, drawing, and multi-media installation, artists Logan Rayment, Kuhlein Migue, and Jonathan Carroll investigate ideas of migration, health, and labour. Rayment uses photography to explore the silent changes of non-permanently returning home, creating a narrative about migration/home/labour/rust/family. Migue’s drawings abstract and re-contextualize colonial representations of the Philippine landscape, exploring how colonial extraction affects the land and its people. Carroll uses interactive media to dissect small-scale social history through the commodities that shaped the life of his great grandparents. The show examines how changing migration patterns and the draw of the working wage have shaped their home communities.

MFA COHORT INTROS: Introducing Kuhlein Migue 🪴

Kuhlein Migue is a Filipino artist currently based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Canada. Her research interests lie in the landscape genre, particularly in its reinterpretation through abstraction. Drawing on postcolonial theory, diaspora studies, art history and migration studies, she critically examines the imperial gaze within classical landscape painting and photography. Through painting and drawing, she explores how spaces of belonging are reimagined in response to exclusion. Kuhlein’s recent work centers on archival imagery taken of the Philippine islands during the American colonial period, particularly on deconstructing the idyllic and essentialized depictions of rural life, land, and labor.
