🌐 ARTWORKS Connects 🌐

October is shaping up to be a busy month for the ARTWORKS Athens Curatorial Residency (A/ACR). Alongside our ongoing exchange with SAHA, we are thrilled to welcome to Athens João Mourão and Luís Silva, co-founders of Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon’s independent contemporary art platform.

Working as a curatorial duo since 2009, João and Luís have built a dynamic joint practice spanning exhibitions, publications, and international projects. Highlights include curating the Portuguese Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and their upcoming appointment to co-curate ARCO2046, the central project of ARCOmadrid 2027.

During their residency, João and Luís will explore queerness, love, friendship, care, and solidarity as ways of imagining alternative modes of cultural production and collective life. Through studio visits, discussions, and meetings across the city, they will connect with local artists, curators, and self-organized initiatives whose practices challenge dominant institutional structures to propose new forms of visibility, belonging, and togetherness.

✨We look forward to the meaningful encounters, conversations, and long-lasting connections that will emerge throughout their time in Athens. 🏛️

“Where Do Sleepwalkers Go?”, a solo exhibition by Yuli Yamagata, opens today (Sep 16) at Kunsthalle Lissabon in Lisbon.

Yamagata transforms the space through a dream logic, in which works spread across the floor and walls, as if overflowing their own boundaries. Fabrics extend beyond their supports, while flowers, recurring throughout the exhibition, sprout from different bodies and objects. They emerge from cerebellums, a baby’s navel and high-heeled shoes, while pieces of cheese morph into new forms, and a small television seems to ripple through time and space. The monstrous and the fantastic emerge not as that which disrupts the boundaries between the familiar and the uncanny.

The show continues a project initiated at Católica Art Center in October 2025 and results from a collaboration with the School of Arts of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto.
