![Xochimilco [where the flowers grow]
it was very good… Friday, March 27, 2026. In the days before Holy Week, seven days before Viernes Santo, on the week’s eve of La Quema de Judas (the burning of Judas), on the last day of creation. 12:55pm.
We are floating the canals of Xochimilco, weaving between the chinampas of branch and reed and mud and root and bone. This is the ancient land of the flower fields, now surrounded by Ciudad de México.
On the bank of this particular island, a black axolotl lays its clutch as we slide the front slope of our trajinera onto 19.27155° N, 99.08747° W.
The island is half the length of a soccer pitch, and about as wide. There are a few small balding trees along the canals surrounding it, willow. Vegetation is otherwise comprised of low grasses, wild flowers, and reeds. At its center, the earth rises a meter above the water.
I am told that long ago, this had been a floating raft- like all the nearby islands- fabricated for cultivation by the Nahua. Like the chinampas, they are somehow both here and gone. Rooted and yet still floating. Mestizos.
Our driver ties off the boat, and I step onto the soft perimeter. The others stay back with cameras pointed forward, as I trudge the burn lines of pounded sticks and smoldering reeds that make up the outline of the island.
The charcoal on my knees seems to foreshadow the flames to come on April 4, with burning of the effigies, but we will all be gone by then.
From a north-facing position, crouched against willow roots, I peer over the meter-tall edge.
There is a group of 8 adult humans. Some are dancing; others are in a circle on their knees looking at something. Their shiny metallic ponchos are what drew us here in the first place- and then their laughter. There is a happiness in their shouting punctuated by what feels like an observant quietness. I maybe see what they see? A nest of eggs? There is bent grass between us. It is mid day.
Other things I see: a sharp form, penetrating sky, glistening. A ray of the sun, petrified. Contemporary clothing under Mylar. A bottle of fermented drink. Sunglasses. Dancing. It is 12:55pm. Finally sending this on Easter Sunday.](https://s3.imginn.com/658855856_18582337429002888_364935744242864816_n.jpg?t51.82787-15/658855856_18582337429002888_364935744242864816_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_p1290x1290_tt6&_nc_cat=104&ig_cache_key=Mzg2ODgyMjYwMjA0Nzc4MjIwNA%3D%3D.3-ccb7-5&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=58cdad&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6IkNBUk9VU0VMX0lURU0ueHBpZHMuMTQ0MC5zZHIucmVndWxhcl9waG90by5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=GL6L3JhUc6YQ7kNvwHpuA5f&_nc_oc=AdrqYhcnh4DJreBcpbnLegxyfaqYEQ1dI_SQ9bz21QDyxYatqyczxmoolbg0rwUlrMnwUnC-pl_WPxgMCAohfrnK&_nc_ad=z-m&_nc_cid=0&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-3.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=gKVva7gd72-l3RSRNnq5XA&_nc_ss=7a20f&oh=00_AQNNWn_isApJQFuyJNoMqLKsdgYk-VNPu0bE2vDcL_dLXA&oe=6AE20978)
