Every year I try to take at least one long road trip, so last summer I set my sights on Oregon and Montana to visit some old pals and attend a wedding. I don’t think there’s anything better than a few thousand miles on the road in solitude to help answer life’s big questions - Who am I? What matters to me? How do I see the world?

The paradox is that the more I go on solo trips, the more I recognize I’m never really alone - nature is always there with me. I get to know myself by getting to know my environment. There’s no separation between the two - we are one and the same, the cosmos made conscious and, in the words of Carl Sagan, “a way for the universe to know itself.” In a moment of silence, the time and space between my carefully constructed ego and the birds and the trees, the mountains and the lakes, dissolves. And there just is.
