GESS Belt Series - Race 3

At the 2014 Aussies, long time Surf Sports athlete @kurtmillshanson , now approaching his 34th birthday, was looking for his first Australian Championship and to continue the unbelievable history the Hanson family has in swimming and surf lifesaving.

He made the final of the open belt race, only to come up against some absolute beasts, none more-so than @natesmith_ironman and @devlahey .

In one of the great wins for the good guys, Kurt clears out to a good lead, and finishes strong to win his maiden Australian Championship.

Anyone who knows the family will see how special the scenes on the beach are with his Dad, the great Ian Hanson, and his @freshwater.surfclub mates.

This has to be spoken about. @world_aquatics

The World Cup series consisting of 5 stops all over the world brings together the world’s best athletes. A series designed to bring action, inspire communities and future generations and to bring high class and fast tactical racing.

And yet the offer made to these same athletes is so unbelievably low it raises big questions:

What value do you actually place on us, our sport, and its future?

Because an offer like this doesn’t just affect athletes today. It sends a message about how much our sport is valued — and how seriously its future, including its place on the Olympic stage, is being treated.

The next slides show parts of the email sent to the worlds top athletes.

If this is how we value the people carrying the sport forward, what does that say about where we’re heading?

Dear Captain

Maybe take a moment to consider the invitation — and just how embarrassing this email is to elite athletes.

Athletes of our calibre in other sports are being offered millions in some cases, and hundreds of thousands in others.

And this is what we are being offered for competing at the highest level of our sport?

Maybe it’s time to seriously reconsider what you believe elite athletes — and our sport — are worth.

I genuinely cannot understand how you can value elite performance this way.

“We recognize the immense dedication required to perform at this level…”

The immense dedication, sacrifice and commitment required to compete at this level cannot possibly be reflected in an offer like this.

This is not just about the money. It is about the value you place on the sport and the athletes who make this sport what it is.

$2,500.

For 5 stops. ALL OVER THE WORLD.

For an ENTIRE season.

For a world number 1 ranked athlete.

It takes everything to be at this level and this is what you offer.

**And it’s not the first year we’ve had this conversation. But it’s time people know what is actually being offered to athletes at the highest level of our sport.**

It’s clear to me you don’t support open water or want it for our future.

We give everything to this sport and its future.

It’s time you give something back.

We’re fixing swimming one controversial opinion at a time.

🏊 Separate NCAA swimming & diving
🌎 International roster limits in D1
🇺🇸 Move U.S. Olympic Trials earlier
⚡ Add the 50s of stroke to NCAA swimming
🔥 @kurtmillsHanson’s plan to overhaul the Olympic program
🌍 Consolidate championships + build international feeder meets
🛠️ Restructure USA Swimming before the sport gets left behind

Some of these are overdue. Some might get us cooked in the comments.

That’s the point.

Mobility is Strength.

If you don’t have quality movement at the joint-specific level, any movement you build on top of it will be neither efficient nor functional.

Mobility is fundamental to movement.

You can’t move, where you can’t move. You can’t train where you can’t move.
Stop corroborating the same strategies. Create new movement options.
