Meet the Maker - South Coast Ceramics Market 30 August The Co-Op Gerringong

Kusu Ceramics @kusuceramics
Kusu Ceramics is a small batch studio based in Stanwell Park on Dharawal Land. Inspired by the simplicity of functional design, Penny creates elegant forms with a muted colour palette and a quiet attention to detail. Each utilitarian piece is designed to bring enjoyment to the simple pleasures in our everyday life through their tactile nature and a simplicity of form. In addition to her studio practice Penny is a teacher and glaze technician at Clay Wollongong.

The studio has been busy and buzzing these last few weeks as the infectious creativity of our resident artists spreads through the space in an inspiring whirl of clay love. In this time we welcomed our June resident, Erin Mison, into the studio and it’s been a joy to watch her sculpt and build her ‘impractical vessels and figures’, forms stemming from her obsession with Greek artifacts and the Minotaur.

In May, we welcomed Penny (@kusuceramics ) as our Artist in Residence

Inspired by the simplicity of functional design and form, Penny creates utilitarian work that enhance the small pleasures of everyday life. Using a recycled blend of clays and glazes developed in the studio, her pieces are designed to be both functional and engaging, inviting use through their tactile qualities and understated forms.

During her time with Burnt Dirt, Penny created wheel-thrown coffee tables and plinths that could function individually or grouped. We got to witness Penny’s incredible wheel skills as these forms grew and grew, and the residency studio became filled with an array of gentle yet bold vessels.

We so look forward to seeing how these works continue to grow and progress.

When the mist cascades over Woodhill Mountain drawing up from Wattamolla valley the scene is spectacular. Science and beauty entwined, the air pressure differential, the breeze, the sun hitting the mist seems mystical but is just science in action.

Where do you come from … and where do you go … it doesn’t matter really even if you know. The time will come … and you’ll soon find out … when you get there, will you give us a shout. Along the way … you learn some things … and then finally forget them and their strings. The question that has to be asked … was it really worth it when you remove the masks.
