I was delighted to welcome my very first guest, @kvlmason Kate Mason to talk on The One Single Thing to answer the question:

“What is the one single thing that helps when you are speaking under pressure?”

Kate is a TV presenter, podcaster and documentary-maker who has presented live sport for over a decade.
She hosts The Athletic's flagship football show focussing on the biggest news stories of the
week, and the Tactical Preview Show
She has twice been shortlisted for Columnist of the Year at the SJA British Sports Journalism Awards - only the second woman ever to be nominated.
Away from football she was the first woman to present mens Test cricket for UK television.
Her audio output includes the BBC Radio 4 documentary series How To Spot Potential and her SJA award-winning three-part series Inside the Qatar World Cup.

In our conversation, Kate describes a flip or switch of intention from an inward to an outward focus when speaking.

This means moving the focus away from ourselves and our ‘performance’ and shifting it to our audience and listeners.

When we hold an overly inward focus, we can become very hyperaware and overanalytical of our communication skills.

But if we can make our audience the primary intention, it can relieve some of the pressure and tension we can experience.

By inviting an outward focus, we take the perspective of our listener and think objectively and curiously about what they need from us.

Try it out for yourself and see what shifts you notice in your own communication!
