Ellington to the World: Generational Power of Black Culture and Spaces
Thursday, September 26 | 7 PM

In celebration of the Harlem Renaissance Centennial, vocalist Candice Hoyes and bassist Noah Jackson presents high-flying, lyrical Duke Ellington works that remain as innovative today as they were in Ellington’s day. “On a Turquoise Cloud” paved the way in style and substance for today’s musical theater, soul, and contemporary classical music. This rare, genre-bending collection has been nearly unknown since Duke Ellington's performances over 70 years ago, and was reclaimed by Hoyes through research. Music lovers will enjoy a performance and conversation exploring Duke Ellington as a global artist who generated a broader cultural movement across borders, and the value of the Harlem Renaissance in the digital age. Joining the conversation are professor and performer Dr. Kwami Coleman, photographer Dario Calmese, and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. #dukeellington #schomburgprograms #harlemrenaissance #harlemrenaissance100
Register at SchomburgCenter.eventbrite.com.

The program is made possible in part with funding from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation administered by LMCC and with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by LMCC.

After 2 years of working tiredlessly on the INTRINSIC Record, we must say that Friday night's Release Concert was LIT! ~like a new sun being born in a cloud of stardust, a thousand paper lanterns rising in the sky, the light of our souls on fire! We are beyond ecstatic for all the forces that came together, and all the people that came out to celebrate the release of INTRINSIC!
We SOLD-OUT the night with hundreds more watching the livestream. People traveled from as far as Montreal crossing the US border! DC, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia! They traveled in the rain, in the cold and fierce winds in a true show of love to gather around the fire of this offering. The energy in the room was out of this world. We time traveled and teleported: through the cry of the strings, the movement of the dancers, the blow of the horns, the summoning of ancestors, the water of ritual, the heat of the erotic, the call of the drums, the wail of the singers, the intention behind every lyric. So many have been texting us, calling us, emailing us letting us know the concert was the exact medicine they needed.
With heartfelt devotion, we present to you INTRINSIC: 17 anthems, bilingual ballads, and unconventional love songs. May this new body of work be heart medicine for these times.
