I just returned home from the in-person portion of my training as an Intimacy Coordinator, and I’m thrilled to share this expansion of my career in film.

For those unfamiliar with the role, an IC helps performers and production teams prepare for and film intimate scenes with clear communication, agreed boundaries, and ongoing consent. We help create a safer work environment and bring care and structure to some of the most vulnerable scenes in entertainment.

This work feels purposeful to me. It brings together my experience as a performer and what I’ve learned through my therapeutic practice. Looking back, I recognise moments in my own career, and in stories other performers have shared, where having an IC could have significantly changed the experience on set.

There is a culture in film where performers can feel expected to say yes and get the job done. That expectation can be mistaken for professionalism, but we also have a human standard that can get overlooked in the pursuit of the vision we are helping create.

An IC helps shift that culture of saying yes to a culture of consent. Understanding what we are being asked to do, having space to express our boundaries, and knowing those boundaries will be respected throughout filming allows us to bring more of ourselves to our art.

The role of an IC does not inhibit the vision; it supports it by helping create an environment where performers’ rights and boundaries are valued alongside the story being told. When we know we have been heard and have support in communicating and upholding our boundaries, we can step into the story with greater confidence and fully embody the character we are playing.

One of the most extraordinary features of film is the collaborative artistry it requires to bring a story to life. Having an IC as part of that collaboration brings intentional care to the portrayal of intimacy, something that can move us deeply and connect us to our own humanity.

Thank you, @cintima.co , for the exceptional training, for your guidance and continued mentorship. I’m grateful to have shared this part of my training with this cohort, and excited to bring what I’ve learned into the work ahead. 💖
