Happy Midterms SAE! Our next midterm feature comes from the PDX ARCH 4/584 Studio titled “Mad Libs,” which is taught by Pro Tem Instructors Annie Kwon and John Szot.

This studio is dedicated to exploring the concept of sampling as a means of organizing a building project. In the initial phase of the term, each student conducted research from various sources to identify a ‘spolia’ component. Spolia, in the context of architecture and art history, refers to the practice of repurposing existing materials, such as architectural elements, sculptures, or decorative components, in the construction or embellishment of new buildings or works of art.

After choosing their object to sample, their components were extracted and meticulously documented through orthographic drawings and 3D models. Subsequently, they underwent various processes of abstraction, involving distortion, alteration, reshaping, reconfiguration, deforming, transmutation, and more.

At the midterm point, students showcased their sampled objects, which ranged from Indian Jali, matchboxes, and piping to grain silos, and Victorian molding and trim.

In the second half of the term, students will devote their time to utilizing this library of ideas or a kit-of-parts (consisting of drawings and models) to organize a building of public significance for downtown Portland.

When I think of #ArchitectureSchool at #RISD, I think fondly about our Studio discussions on #Space #Darkness #Light and our #Senses A student once mapped out the basement from The Silence of the Lambs. Only to find out how ordinary the home was 🤔. Delighted to come across the original set design drawings at the #museumofthemovingimage
