Indigenous designer spotlight: Kwósel an Indigenous female owned brand bringing Native artistry into contemporary fashion through bead work and sustainability. Melissa Victor, the Indigenous artist, traditional home is Xwchíyò:m (Cheam First Nation) in S’ólh Téméxw, the Fraser River Valley. The name Kwósel means “Star” in Halq’eméylem, the language of the Xwchíyò:m people. Melissa began learning beadwork from her cousin in 2018 and later returned to her home territories to learn traditional, sustainable cedar harvesting and weaving. She launched Kwósel in 2023 as a way to reconnect with her Xwchíyò:m roots and carry those teachings forward for her children. Her work combines traditional beadwork, cedar weaving and contemporary design, including a signature triangle beadwork pattern. Her pieces aren’t created simply as accessories, they’re designed to carry stories of culture, land and identity. Kwósel has gone international showcasing at New York Fashion Week in 2024 and 2025, as well as Paris Fashion Week in 2024, bringing Indigenous design and wearable art to major fashion stages. Attended the @verdavainneofficial NYFW SS 27 show held at Cipriani. This handcrafted eveningwear featured clean tailoring, and refined atelier craftsmanship. Every peice of as elegant and constructed with refined restraint. Designs featured interpretations of hand-drawn designs woven in Lake Como, Italy, emphasizing bright palettes like yellow, green, and vibrant floral arrangements. People will always have something to say about you if you’re doing something right! It’s just the way the world works, I don’t make the rules. The more successful, happy, adjusted and thriving that you are, the more your name will stay in the mouths of those who aren’t. Pay attention to the ones that volunteer to speak poorly about someone vs those who speak about someone in self defense or to clear their name. One is a show of character and the other is protection.
