@calik9 Let’s be honest for a second. A marker word or a clicker paired with food or toys would have made this cleaner, faster, and actually make sense to the dog. More importantly, it would have made the process tolerable. Learning does not need to feel like a punishment to be effective, and clarity does not come from dragging a dog through confusion until it shuts down. Even if this dog eventually performs the behavior, that does not mean the training worked. It means the dog endured it. There is a difference, and pretending otherwise is just bad faith.

And let’s not pretend this is advanced work. This is amateur 101. If your method cannot compete with basic timing, a marker, and reinforcement in terms of clarity, engagement, and yes, enjoyment for the dog, that is not some hard truth about training. That is a skill issue. Dogs learn best when information is clean and the process makes sense to their nervous system, not when they are stressed, flooded, or worn down. If the lesson technically lands but the experience sucks, you did not train well. You just forced compliance the hard way and called it expertise.

Comparing dog training to human therapy is emotional manipulation, not science. Humans process trauma through language and meaning. Dogs process stress through state change, timing, and pattern interruption. Confusing those two is how dogs stay stuck, escalate, or end up euthanized in the name of being gentle. This is not about dominance or cruelty. It is about biology. If your training philosophy only works when you anthropomorphize the dog, it is not compassionate it’s fucking negligence.

If you want to learn how to work with the nervous system instead of arguing with emotions, I will be teaching this in depth at my seminar in Toronto. We are breaking down behavior through biology, timing, handling, and real world application that actually keeps dogs alive and families safe. Come learn when with us contact @dankroftk9 for tickets.
