“Gods Girl”

This piece came to me while live painting at @personifiedroom , a gathering for Christian creatives hosted by @dejah.symone . I came in knowing that I wanted to experiment with perspective, but I did not have the full piece mapped out. Once I started painting, the direction began to reveal itself naturally.

A lot of that direction was shaped by my readings of the Kebra Nagast and learning more about Ethiopia’s deep connection to Christianity. The more I seek knowledge about our history, the more I find Africa woven into so much of what we know, believe, and experience today. There is something powerful about finding those threads and realizing just how deeply our people are connected to the beginnings of so much.

Here, I wanted to depict an Ethiopian woman completely free in her praise. Her hands are open. Her face is lifted. Her hair moves freely behind her. There is no concern for who is watching or how she is being perceived. She is simply existing in the presence of God.

There is something beautiful to me about seeing a Black woman this way. Holy. Free. Full of joy. Completely open to receiving what God has for her.

Maybe sometimes worship is simply allowing ourselves to be exactly who God created us to be.

“We’re not lucky, we’re blessed… to be having Klover 🍀” this was easily one of my favorite days out of the year so far… I teared up sooo many times at the amount of love that was felt in the room. The amount of people that showed up to show love to us… I wasn’t even expecting! I wish I could’ve gotten pictures with everyone but just know I love you all more than words can explain. Klover was kicking nonstop throughout the shower so I know she felt it too! (These are just the first set of pics!! If anyone has anymore please send them to me 💚) With me only having about 3 1/2 more weeks left I can’t help but be grateful to God for making it this far and surrounding me with such a beautiful village of people. Thank you so much to everyone who came for your time, your love, your gifts, sweet words and just being you!! Thank you for the beautiful people who also could not make it but still bought things from the registry and sent some cash moneyyyy for Klo Klo! Thank you to everyone who’s congratulated me and my little family on our new blessing 🫶🏽

Things like this bring me so much joy. Last Saturday of May, I watched mothers of all kind and women of all varieties truly laughing, crying, and healing together. 🫶🏾I thank the most high for everyone and the love and compassion comprised in this community. Not only was a time had I saw people really releasing stagnant energy, expressing themselves creatively, and ultimately showing up for themselves and that is super important in this life.

I look forward to continuing the tradition of empowering the community one Expo at a time.
