Govans Improv Collective is having their first live performance TONIGHT 😎 at 7pm featuring works by artists @katie_hawleyy and @marcforrest_ink
I riffed off the concept of the volunteers collective at the red room and decided to form “Govans improv collective” back in January, where random collections of musicians met together and improvised for an hour or so - now tonight is the first night a few of us are going fully live!
Scroll to see all the artists who are performing
Hope to see you at Govans from 6:30-8:30pm tonight

Spooky Piano is BACK! Returning for a second installment, Steven James' Spooky Piano has returned to haunt Peabody for a second year in a row - and has now brought friends ... Come hear the pulse-pounding drama of three amplified demon basses shaking the foundations of the earth. Listen to the haunting strains of a new organ fugue by Alexander Howard, inspired by the inimitable legend J.S. Bach. Lose your sanity in Kylan Hillman's newest maddening sound sculpture, Append! Witness the debut of the new saxophone + voice/piano duo Crucible - Steven James and Andrew Kadar - featuring the world premiere of Kadar's Invocation, and an expanded redux of Steven's popular Out of the Abyss. Hear all this AND MORE on Sunday, October 25th at 7:30 pm in Griswold Hall, at the Peabody Institute!

Coming up February 4, @outsidetime__ presents a night celebrating the release of Tone Keepers, a new album of compositions for flute and piccolo by Rachel Beetz (@rachelbeetz). Find more information on Tone Keepers here.

Rachel will begin the evening by performing Tone Keepers in its entirety. Each piece revolves around a simple but inventive technique for generating acoustic sound coupled with a discrete mode of electronic processing, spinning out variations on the unique effect it produces. She encourages sounds to crystalize rather than expand, uncovering new permutations and emotional dimensions as curiosity leads her forward. The ear of the listener becomes a magnifying glass as the mind affixes itself to the music, its focus sharpening with each cyclical return.

The evening will culminate with Rachel leading a performance of James Tenney’s “In A Large Open Space,” scored for “any 12 or more sustaining instruments.” The audience will be invited to move freely among the musicians, who will be spread throughout Rhizome. Performers will be drawn from throughout the DMV’s vibrant experimental music communities.

Composer, flutist, and improviser, Rachel Beetz explores presence through sound and listening. Her works recreate physical atmospheres based on her deep listening adventures in the wild, exploring hidden worlds of nature and machines. Combining experimental field recordings and electronically modified flutes, her works examine community, environmentalism, and women’s work through sound, textiles, and lighting. Her projects have been featured in concert halls and galleries in Australia, Iceland, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
