🎶 Reveal time! This week’s mystery instrument was the steel pan!

The steel pan is one of the only instruments invented in the 20th century. It comes from Trinidad and Tobago, where it is the national instrument.

The steel pan was invented as a form of resistance and strength. Its roots trace back to the talking drums of West Africa, used for ceremony and communication. French colonists brought Carnival traditions to Trinidad in the 1780s, but enslaved Africans were prohibited from these celebrations, so they created their own underground celebrations. After emancipation in 1834, the festivals continued, but the British government attempted to suppress these celebrations by banning drums and instruments. However, this didn’t stop the musicians from playing their music.

Over the years, biscuit tins, paint pots, dustbins, car parts were being turned into instruments. In the 1930s, musicians started using the 55-gallon oil drum. They hammered its surface into dents, each shaped and positioned to make specific notes.

The instrument opened doors for musicians: in 1951, players from Trinidad’s steel bands were chosen to form the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) and perform in London for the Festival of Britain. The first time the instrument had ever been heard live in Britain. Audiences were so shocked an oil drum could make that sound that some reportedly looked underneath the pans to check where the music was actually coming from.

The steel pan officially became the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago in 1992, recognizing how far the music has traveled. From carnivals to global stages to Disney soundtracks to Broadway and even classical orchestras, the steel pan can be heard around the world.

Please enjoy this performance of the steel pan performed by @kyle_vane. Tune in next week for another What’s That Instrument Wednesday! 🌟
