Backyard Trees — Oil on panel, 16 × 20 in.

A plein-air painting completed over two sessions.

What initially drew me to this scene was the lovely arrangement of values created by the overcast light. I’ve always enjoyed painting on overcast days because, unlike direct sunlight, the lighting conditions remain relatively stable. The values don’t shift nearly as dramatically, allowing me to spend more time observing and painting without having to chase the changing light.

Something I’ve found particularly helpful when painting outdoors is using a white umbrella. It serves a purpose beyond simply keeping the sun off my canvas. By filtering the light and slightly darkening the surface I’m painting on, it allows me to judge my mixtures more accurately.

Without an umbrella, the bright illumination of the sky can make the colors on my canvas appear much lighter than they actually are. To compensate, I might unintentionally darken my mixtures, only to bring the painting indoors and discover that the entire thing has become considerably darker than intended!

The umbrella helps counteract this effect. Because my canvas appears slightly darker under its shade, I can work with lighter mixtures while maintaining more chromatic, colorful mixtures.

It’s a small adjustment to my outdoor painting setup, but one that has made a tremendous difference in how I observe and interpret values.

And, of course, there’s something particularly lovely about spending a few hours outdoors, surrounded by trees, simply observing the light. 🌳🎨.

Over the week we covered various painting techniques and topics concerning plein air, and I will say I was blown away by the amount of talent and knowledge 🤯

• So many take aways, but ultimately thank you to the instructors who took their time to share what knowledge they have, as well as everyone who was there to paint alongside with 🙏🏼 it was such a pleasure 😁

This is the @arteva.club

A group of artists coming together through travel, culture and the simple joy of painting side by side!

Earlier this year, we travelled through India, painting in the streets, getting lost in new places, sharing meals, ideas and long conversations about art and life. It wasn’t just about making paintings, it was about experiencing everything together and letting that shape the work.

What came out of it feels like more than a collection of paintings. It’s a record of moments, friendships, stories, experiments and the feeling of being somewhere completely new with a sketchbook in hand.

We’ll be sharing more from the journey over the next few weeks: short films, behind-the-scenes moments, artist conversations, and of course the beautiful paintings themselves!

If you’re into plein-air painting, offbeat travel, learning or a collector, come follow along and join us at arteva.club. We’d love to have you with us on this journey!

Built by artists, for artists.
A growing archive of how artists see the world together.

Welcome to Arteva.Club 🎨

4 incredible days of learning with @kylekcma! We got to see 3 demos and I ended the workshop by bringing home his beautiful Queen Anne’s lace demo painting to hang in my house. The perfect way to remember such an inspiring experience. Thanks Kyle!
