I printed an a in Portugal!

Three weeks ago, I was invited as a keynote speaker to the Encontro de Tipografia @encontrodetipografia by the Portuguese Typography Association, and the day before the conference I participated in a printing workshop run by @angelodgoncalves

The workshop was part of Angelo’s PhD research on modular type. Using laser cut and 3D printed modular metal parts and printing gear, one of the goals of the workshop was to introduce a traditional printing technique to students who had no prior experience with letterpress printing.

Our task in the workshop was to design one large letter with the modular metal parts. As always, I wanted to design my letter as big as possible. The straight parts with semicircular endings made me think of fingertips, and that was the idea I went with. To me, the top left part and the bottom right part of the an are hands.

Building this up from so many individual parts was a bit tedious and I had to start over twice, but I really love the result especially with irregularities where the parts didn’t print properly.

PS: Cheers to my printing partner @la.rage who designed the cool X you see in the last slide.
