London & Singapore

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

London has always been charming in its insistence on stasis. In the way its cathedrals stand even as religion divides and collapses worldwide. In the way its skylines are fabled yet reproduced in a gazillion souvenir shops. Having visited three times now, first when I was eleven, and now at the wonderfully cynical age of twenty one, I see the wear and tear beyond its melting stew of classicism and imported culture.

I am more alien than ever in this linguistic motherland, and simultaneously attached to it in a pseudo-nostalgic way. The Dover Cliffs were a dream of course. I woke at 7am desperate to run to the edge of the country. I stood upon the limestone cliffs alone, the waters bordering France, my track shoes scraping against thousand year old chalk. In the swallowing blues and giant whites, a spectator to nature feels a belonging to something beyond themselves.

Then again, where does one belong? Not simply the body, but in spirit? My childhood was nurtured upon stories from this empire, its clipped mannerisms and skewed perceptions of human civility. Something was taken from generations of people who were ruled by its systems. In a way I’ve been conditioned to search for what’s lost, to return to this city if ever someday, my art demands a market where my words are understood (though not necessarily felt).

My mandarin falters in the areas where english dominates. I can no longer speak to my grandparents without an interpreter. A city glorified once for its colonial conquest now exists in rampant inequality, disorder creeping into its cracked brick walls and the stained train doors of the tube. It is somewhat romantic. London in all its faded glamour and confused identity has guilt running deep beneath its pipelines. And when I travel to London, I feel it; a haunting rage and freedom. It is a place of contradiction. Of progress and unhappiness. Of experimentation and destruction. Of piss and cultivated flowers that paint over bruises in the pavements. It is in its mess of multidimensional identities traversing continents — fugitives, dreamers seeking a canvas —that I find a semblance of home.

I’m so glad I got the opportunity to witness the entire cast of Bernarda Alba in a beautiful play exploring themes so rooted into the past that still, somehow, stand significant in our world today. It was so intriguing to see the somewhat modern take on Lorca’s classic play, and how the lines between the past and the present were blurred. The dynamics between the sisters and Bernarda were used so effectively to deliver the themes of feminism and the repression of women. With due acknowledgements to Prasheela, Thea and Jade, of course, who so fiercely demanded the stage and left us all with a haunting scene, only lingering silence and a sole light source left. A night well spent. Congratulations!
