Le film sera présenté en sélection officielle pour sa première mondiale 🎉

Libérateur d’Haïti, Toussaint Louverture est encore présenté comme le «Napoléon noir», symptôme d’une histoire qui n’éclaire les figures noires qu’à l’ombre des figures blanches. À travers son œuvre, Élie Diol, jeune artiste, interroge la manière dont l’histoire a été écrite et transmise.

Toussaint Louverture, liberator of Haiti, endures as the “Black Napoleon” a symbol of a history that casts Black heroes in the shadow of white ones. Through his work, Élie Diol reexamines how history is shaped, remembered, and transmitted.

There are projects so emotionally overwhelming that it becomes difficult to find the words to express all their beautiful, joyful complexity. And one post will never be nearly enough.

First of all, I want to thank Joseph Ntjam, my namesake, my dad, who agreed to embark on this crazy adventure with me. I still can’t fully grasp how lucky and honoured I am that a father would give his child the gift of sharing his painful history, but also his joys, in front of a camera. Papa, I love you. This whole adventure deserves a book of its own, just to put into words the depth of my respect for you.

And then, @sonxseed How could I ever have imagined that a friend could place so much trust in me, based on an idea that was still barely taking shape? And that through this film, we would discover that we are actually family, both of us coming from the village of Ngog Lituba in Cameroon.

When I wrote this film, I knew I was writing it for you and Joseph, and that you were the one who had to take on this “role”, which, in the end, isn’t really a role at all. You have honoured me so deeply by agreeing to be part of this film, and by becoming, in real life, my new sibling, and now another child of Ntjam: Soñ Gweha Ntjam.

You were an anchor throughout this entire film, for both me and Papa. My gratitude to you is immeasurable.

And none of this adventure would have been possible without the everlasting companionship of @sean.hart and @nicolas_pirus who were there in the primordial chaos of writing this film.

What isn’t said enough is that this film was an extraordinary feat, a race against time that somehow defied it. Everything really began last February, with a writing process that felt incredibly difficult to me, and that I struggled to share. But Sean and Nicolas found solutions, out of love, even when none of it was easy.

We’ve been working together for years now, and my films have continued to evolve thanks to, and alongside, these two people who have never once let me down.

Ulaan Monster will be screening on March 14 at Cinéma du Musée in Montreal during @festival_filmsurlart

In 2022, I went for a coffee with @m.ganbold________ . She told me about a journey she was about to take to Mongolia. Her story moved me, and I decided to follow her.
In the years that followed, we filmed and carefully shaped this medium-length film into what it is today. It moves through dance, but at its heart, it’s about family, and the ambiguous bond we maintain with our homeland.
