Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More): Edwin on the grotesque machinery of overwork Ghost stories, folklore, black magic, possession and supernatural figures have long been part of Indonesian cinema, with the horror genre flourishing in the 70s and 80s. Still from Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More), 2026 One of Indonesian horror’s most iconic figures, the Sundel Bolong is a female ghost from Javanese folklore, brought to life by legendary horror star Suzzanna. Beautiful, monstrous and grotesque, she became an enduring figure of Indonesian popular horror. Still from Sundelbolong, 1981 Possession, the haunted home and the return of the dead became recurring elements of Indonesia’s horror tradition. Still from Pengabdi Setan, 1980 The supernatural has often been closely entangled with the everyday: family, community, belief and social fears. Still from Ratu Ilmu Hitam (The Queen of Black Magic), 1981 Rather than returning to an existing ghost or legend, Edwin and co-writer Eka Kurniawan set out to create their own creature. In Monster Pabrik Rambut, the supernatural enters the factory. Still from Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More), 2026 As workers are pushed into punishing overtime, exhaustion takes hold and a dark figure begins to possess their bodies. Here, fear lies in the machinery that keeps us working with the body as the vessel for capitalist exploitation. Still from Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More), 2026 Screening as part of SİNELECTION on: Sat 17.10. 20:30 Wed 21.10. 20:30 Fri 23.10. 20:30 Film poster for Monster Pabrik Rambut (Sleep No More), 2026

"Rojer," a short film by Edwin was recovered after severe flooding in Jakarta. Shot in 2014 on Kodak 16mm color reversal and black-and-white film, the footage was entirely hand-processed by @lablabalaba and had never been digitized. The reels were completely submerged in water, causing extensive physical damage. Despite initial recovery efforts, moisture and mold had caused several layers of the film to stick together. At Movie Studio Bali's Analog Film Center, we carefully separated the damaged sections meter by meter, cleaning and drying the film throughout the process. This delicate work required precise handling to prevent further damage to the emulsion, film base, and perforations. Following thorough inspection, cleaning, drying, and preparation, the surviving images have finally been scanned and digitized for the very first time. Through this recovery process, the surviving 16mm reversal film can now be preserved, with digital copies safely archived for long-term storage and future restoration. Get in touch with us to discuss your project and find the best approach for your films.
