I mounted my iPhone on my basejumping helmet to camerafly wingsuits.

I’ve always been a GoPro user: every year they come out with a new model with better quality. Colors are beautiful, image quality is insane, slowmo is mind-blowing. But no matter the upgrade, you always get that recognizable “action cam” image style.

And this is why those cameras are amazing: they’re idiot-proof! As long as you point the camera towards your subject, you get a cool image.

Over the last few years, I got better at framing while flying. And getting the shot didn’t satisfy me anymore: I wanted to get a different style of image, to get rid of the “action cam” effect.

I realized my iPhone could produce amazing footage (my WWL video was almost entirely filmed with it), so I got my friend Demi to design and 3D-print an iPhone mount.

He had to work on different designs to make it fit on my helmet while keeping an aerodynamic profile. After a few iterations, he arrived to a result I was comfortable jumping without losing my phone.

I find the image very beautiful, but unfortunately we still have too many vibrations in the background.

I think the iPhone has too many limitations to be used as a main camera, but the experiment was fun and made me want to buy a proper camera setup. And the iPhone mount will still be useful for people who want to do air-to-air livestreams during demo jumps!
