Yesterday afternoon at Rusellae, Dr. Alessandro Carabia guided visitors through the area of the early medieval cemetery, presenting the latest results of the ongoing excavation campaign.

It was a chance to share the site, archaeological methods and the new evidence emerging around the cathedral area.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. More from the field soon.

Very pleased to see our 2026 archaeological fieldwork in Tuscany featured today by UBNow.

This summer, the IMPERO Project opened two very different windows onto the history of southern Etruria.

At Podere Cannicci, the excavation revealed a purpose-built agricultural storage facility containing 24 dolia still preserved in situ, offering new evidence for the collection, storage and redistribution of agricultural products within the surrounding territory.

At Rusellae, our first campaign uncovered 10 early medieval burials near the medieval cathedral. The project now turns toward reconstructing the chronology and organization of the cemetery, the people buried there, and the changing urban space around them. Excavations will continue in September.

Two sites. Centuries apart. One research program looking at how communities lived, organized space and shaped the Ombrone Valley over time.

Grateful to our students, specialists, colleagues and partner institutions who made this season possible.

🏛️ The first archaeological excavation season at the medieval cemetery of Rusellae has officially come to an end!

Over four weeks of fieldwork, our team uncovered new burials preliminarily dated to the eighth century CE, providing important evidence for understanding the organization and development of the cemetery surrounding the cathedral. ⛏️💀

The campaign also launched the digital mapping of the cemetery and the adjoining Hadrianic bath complex, producing high-resolution orthophotos, 3D models of the graves and Roman structures, and new documentation of the service tunnels first identified by Antonio Minto in the 1940s. 📸🗺️

Professor Todd Fenton and the MSU anthropology team examined the human remains, while ceramics and small finds were catalogued and inventoried. 🔬🏺

Despite four weeks of intense heat, our students and team worked with extraordinary resilience and professionalism. A second campaign in September will investigate the questions that remain before the excavation expands in 2027.

A heartfelt thank-you to the Archaeological Park of Roselle for its hospitality and continued support! 🙏

That’s a wrap on our first excavation campaign at Roselle! 👋

From the excavation area, our team waves goodbye after an exciting campaign that allowed us to better understand many aspects of the medieval urbanism of this extraordinary city.

A heartfelt thank-you to all our students, the park rangers, Director Leonardo Bochicchio, Administrator Laura Chiarello, and everyone who supported us throughout this new archaeological adventure.

And yes, after weeks in the field, our motto could only be: “So much topsoil!”

We will be back in September for our second excavation campaign. Until then, we wish everyone a wonderful August!
