Final year 2024 project by Chloe Lafleur | Studio DS1 Led by Henry Beech Mole and Helmi Mhiri,

“We live in a society in which current working-age people pay into social security systems that support those not in work (children), those at the end of their careers (retirees), those who cannot work (those with disabilities) and those who are not currently working (unemployed people).
“European social security systems are faced with a demographic crisis, where an insufficient number of workers pay into a system that is supporting an increasingly large number of dependant people.
“The Social Contract is a critical design project that envisions a future where the European model of social security is radically reimagined to place individual and collective risk at the heart of a new medical insurance system.
“The project explores possible architectural outcomes of this new ‘Social Contract’, from the extremes of those for whom health and longevity are paramount, to the nihilism of those who reject the system in favour of hedonistic but high-risk lives.”

April 2023 - May 2023

I've been avoiding this post for some time as words fail me amidst times of transformation.

The second slide of this post captures the moment Siya got "the call". In the video, our friend Sarah was in the back buying decorations for her crystal sale and the tone shifted in Siya's voice. When she looks down at her phone, it's her mom asking to call immediately.

Between the evening of April 29th, 2023 to the 30th morning. I watched in shock as Siya made phone call after phone call scheduling flights back home, calling Aaee (Mom) at the hospital, and comforting family. My best idea was just to hold her amidst the chaos.

I remember Siyas gut telling her this time was different. He could only survive so many years of constant medical emergency. By the morning of the 30th, we left Bloomington just to say goodbye again. At the airport in O'Hare, I wasn't sure what would happen next, but I did know God had a plan.

It was April 2nd, 2023 when we confessed our love for each other, and by April 30th, we weren't sure what was going to happen next.

Siya made it to the hospital in Chennai, with enough time to see Prasad fight for his life. She held his hand, and told him about me. He read my chart and said I would be a great match for her.

The last stanza of Ocean Vuongs 'The Gift' (see picture #10) encapsulates what virtual heartbreak feels like to me. I read this poem often during May 2023 to cope with the reality that life is terrible when you're not with your soulmate.

On May 19th, 2023 Prasad Vasant Kulkarni started his afterlife. Amidst tears, and disbelief, Siya stated: " He could have at least waited one day for to celebrate their anniversary".

Prasad Vasant Kulkarni is someone I met before but I'm saddened not to have met in this body. He was a Venus dominant burst of sunshine, that channeled love, aesthetic, passion and bravery into his incredible daughter.

His soul, I get to re-meet everyday; in moments when Siya turns any creative idea into a business plan, or when she showers insecure friends with spritzes of confidence, or when she asks me to be even more grandiose with everyday life.

May 19th, 2023 is when everything changed
