Bikes hold such an important role in my life. They are great for commuting, building community, and are just fun! I love riding bikes and in a city like Portland, OR it’s made so much better. There’s plenty of nature and good roads/trails to explore. Portland has endless options for local biking with great bike lanes and neighborhood greenways. There’s always new things to see! I love meeting up with friends for a chill ride or short overnight. Though we plan on “riding” our bikes, it always ends up being an excuse to eat a bunch of candy and finish at a bar 😂. It’s always a blast and usually gets quite silly. The bike community here is INSANE. There’s a group ride almost every day of the year organized by groups like @pedalpaloozapdx and @shift2bikes. When I first moved here, the communities on these group rides became my first friends and allowed me to tour the city safely with cool locals! My favorite is Thursdays Night Ride (TNR) every Thursday at Salmon St Fountain around 7:45pm. And there’s lot of bigger events like @made.bike ! Portland has some of the best bike shops I’ve ever visited. The full service shops like @metropoliscycles and @rcbpdx have excellent staff and great service. And if you want to work on your own bikes @communitycyclingcenter and @bikefarmpdx have all the tools and parts you could need! SIDE QUESTS. When you’re traversing the city by bike you can hop off or change routes much easier than in a car. Which tends to send me on crazy side quests. Most often it’s a score in a free pile (most recently a brand new pair of @blundstoneusa IN MY SIZE). But it could be a a new ally I haven’t been down, a friend in need of bike tools, an interesting local shop. Anywhere my ADHD takes me. Much love to the Portland bike world. On several occasions, people have described Portland as a haven for misfits. Maybe it's because the show Portlandia advertised the city as "A place where young people go to retire." Which suggested that the locals aren't the type to buy into hustle culture, but instead get really invested into their hobbies. Maybe it goes back all the way to the Oregon Trail, where people first relocated thousands of miles to live by their own rules. That attitude of moving west and starting fresh is still here. However it started, there's a strong case to be made that Portland is Heaven on Earth for anyone interested in finding themselves. 2026, the year eric and i decided to become endurance athletes. eric ran his first 1/2 marathon last weekend and this weekend i rode my bike 200+ miles from seattle ➡️ portland. thanks to everyone who rode+ran with us and supported us❤️ and to my parents, who made sure we started riding bikes as early as possible (see last slide where my endurance days began, pulling my twin brother around)
