…they say never meet your heroes, phooey!

…on a long spring journey, meeting some friends Mel @tipheadpictures and Jasmine @ladyjax who we all met at Greg’s house for a fantastic workshop last summer @greggormanphoto. I had the luxury to have the glamorous company and most elating conversation with these two photographers for dinner at @theformosa 🥡, so fun. Then headed to @faheykleingallery to see the @bruce_weber show, “Try a little tenderness.” The crowd was so eclectic and I have to thank Mel to encouraging me to take a moment with Bruce while she photographed me. I was in such good company. Bruce was on Cloud 9 and the gallery held stunning work.

A Rose Parade for the books.

I won’t lie, going into this year, I was really dreading the idea of shooting in the rain. I thought I left that life behind in NJ after quitting photojournalism and moving to LA.

I still remember the first time I ever shot in the rain. It was a big state football game, and I was using a 300mm lens on loan from the newspaper I worked at. (IYKYK. If you don’t: it’s a very big, very expensive lens.)

Out of nowhere, it started absolutely pouring. My editors hadn’t given me any protective covering for my gear – it had never been an issue before. So I threw together a makeshift rain cover with a plastic bag and YOLOed it, because, what else was I supposed to do? I had to shoot the game.

Of course, I was surrounded with seasoned sports photographers, who all happened to be males. They kept making jokes and comments at my expense (“must be nice to not care about your $10K lens” ) and making me feel so much worse than I already did.

Cool, cool.

I got drenched. It was freezing. The lens got wet. But I did my job.

My photos not only ran in the small local paper I worked for, but also on the front page of the weekend edition of our parent state paper. I’d later join the staff there and learn how to shoot video. Oh, also? The lens and my camera were totally fine.

Still, that experience haunted me, from the jeers, to feeling unprepared (so un-Virgo).

And the thing is, I LOVE the rain. I’m a hardcore pluviophile. But that’s because now it signals to my nervous system that it’s safe to ease up, take things slow, and cozy up under a blanket. It signals rest. So knowing that I’d have to work in the rain felt very disregulating.

So I couldn’t help but feel cautious going into this year’s parade.

But being part of a photography team that actually supported one another, hyped each other up in the group chat, and being surrounded by the Pasadena community that still showed up for the parade on a rainy New Year’s morning – it shifted something in me.

And wouldn’t you know it: despite all the rain protection I brought for myself and my gear this year, I still got completely soaked. Cameras and lenses included.

Happy New Year from a grateful but waterlogged photographer! This year, I was lucky enough to capture the Pasadena @rose_parade alongside 7 other amazing photographers (and a fantastic assistant) who braved the wet to document this historic event! Would I do it again? Yes! Do I want the next one to be sunny as usual? 1000%! I was also fortunate enough to capture the Tournament of Roses President @tofr1 and @magicjohnson doing the coin toss from the field! Happy 2026, everyone!!

5 years ago, a group of talented friends and I decided to put our collective energy into a statement following the murder of George Floyd, and many others. It received clicks, likes, shares, comments, and so on. But what has happened in 5 years? Can this still happen today? In your town? In your city? To you? The numbers say, “Yes”. These incidents have risen far above the rate it was 5 years ago. When Mr. Floyd died, we saw companies shift policy, police departments shifted too, donations came from all over. The question remains, What did we actually do? To make a difference? And, to the point of this mini film, “What is a black life worth?”

This past weekend was a fun one. Kicked off my first workshop of 2025 w/ @leicaakademieusa We created a class that served as an in depth intro to pigment dye printing. We had a great group of photographers here and all had some great work they brought to life in physical form. This is part of what makes photography special and that’s community. I truly enjoyed being able to talk printing and photography with the attendees. Great conversations were had and pictures were enjoyed. Thank you @moabpaper for the continued support. Thank you team @leicastorela for hosting us. And thank you to all the people who signed up for this workshop. I truly hope you all enjoyed and you keep printing!
