At the H Foundation 10th Anniversary Gala, Classical Chinese Music Society · Qing Yue Ensemble was invited by founder Ms. Tina Xinyan He to perform three pieces: Mo Li Hua, Zi Zhu Diao, and Xiao Bai Men.

The three selections represent different streams of Chinese traditional music: folk song, Jiangnan sizhu, and Kunqu music.

In previous years, this gala often featured Western classical string quartet music. This year, the sound was Chinese. With dizi, sheng, erhu, sanxian, guzheng, yangqin, and percussion, our small Qing Yue ensemble brought traditional Chinese chamber music into a Western gala setting.

Honored to share this music with more than 200 guests, including Dr. Zhixin Sun from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dr. Tianlong Jiao from Bowers Museum, and Dean D. Williams from UCR CHASS.

Performers
Guzheng: Demi Li @yuxuandemili97

Ancient Chinese Music Meets the Terracotta Warriors | Bowers Museum Exhibition 2025

What happens when China’s most iconic national treasures—the Terracotta Warriors—meet the timeless sounds of ancient Chinese music?

From May 24 to October 19, 2025, the Bowers Museum in Southern California presents World of the Terracotta Warriors: New Archaeological Discoveries in Shaanxi in the 21st Century, a landmark exhibition featuring over 110 newly uncovered treasures: warriors, chariot regalia, jade, gold, bronze vessels, and more. These artifacts, many never before seen outside China, reveal groundbreaking insights into pre-dynastic China and the Qin empire.

Classical Chinese Music Society (尔雅社) was honored to be invited by Chairwoman Anne Shih to perform at the opening ceremony. We brought the most traditional form of Chinese music—Guqin (the 3,000-year-old instrument once played by sages and emperors)—to stand side by side with the warriors. Our program featured:

Shen Ren Chang (Communion of Gods and Men), a Guqin masterpiece attributed to Emperor Yao, said to summon heavenly beings.

Kunqu opera melodies, part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

A special fashion runway collaboration with LA designer Alex.

Hearing Guqin and Kunqu abroad is already rare. To perform them in a cultural landmark, alongside relics that almost never leave China, was a deeply moving experience.

If you’re in Southern California, don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. Come for the Terracotta Warriors—and discover the living resonance of authentic traditional Chinese music.
