Celebrating 12 Years of Global Girl Project

Today is our birthday! Global Girl Project is 12 years old 🎉

What began in 2014 with one girl from Rio de Janeiro and one powerful belief, that girls have the power to lead change in their own lives and communities, has grown into a global community of girls, alumnae, partners, facilitators and supporters working together to create change.

Our Founder and CEO, @professoraforte , started Global Girl Project in the US 12 years ago. Since then, more than 1,500 girls across 18 countries have participated in our leadership programmes, strengthening their skills and confidence to take action on the issues that matter to them.

This year, we opened an exciting new chapter with the launch of our Global Girl Leadership Academy (GGLA) pilot programme. In many ways, the Academy is a return to our roots, expanding on our original exchange programme and making it truly accessible for girls to cross borders virtually, connect with one another, and learn from and teach each other. Through the Academy, girls are strengthening their leadership skills while developing and implementing their own Community Action Projects and building a global network of young changemakers.

Twelve years on, our belief in the power of girls to lead is as strong as ever.

To every girl, alumna, grassroots partner, facilitator and supporter who has been part of our story, thank you for growing with us and making these 12 years possible.

Happy 12th birthday, Global Girl Project. Here’s to the next chapter of girls leading change.

Different contexts. Common aspirations!

As we approach International Youth Day on 12 August, we're preparing to celebrate the voices of girls who are leading change in their communities around the world.

From next week, we'll be sharing a series of "Letters to Young People Around the World" written by alumnae of our Global Girl Leadership Initiative (GGLI), inspired by this year's International Youth Day theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."

Through these personal letters, our alumnae will share messages of hope, courage, and leadership, reflecting on what they've learned and what they want young people everywhere to know. While their stories come from different countries and experiences, they remind us that our aspirations for a better future often unite us.

We can't wait to share their words with you.

Stay tuned.

We are grateful to our current and past delivery partners whose commitment and collaboration have made these leadership journeys possible. After completing our three-month Global Girl Leadership Initiative, our graduates don’t simply finish the programme. They step into a global community of girls who continue learning, connecting, and leading together.

Through Global Graduates Connect (GGC), girls from marginalised communities across the world stay linked to a lifelong network of peers who are working for change in their schools, communities, and beyond. It is often the first time many tell us they realise they are not alone in the challenges they face or the leadership they are stepping into.

GGC creates opportunities for girls to:
→ stay connected with peers across countries and cultures
→ strengthen their voices through storytelling and writing training
→ take part in cross-country learning events and global conversations
→ contribute to the Global Girl Voices Blog, sharing their experiences and perspectives
→ continue developing skills through accessible learning materials and locally supported activities

Designed as a blended model of online and offline engagement, the network ensures girls can participate in ways that are inclusive and relevant to their context.

Because leadership does not end at graduation. It grows through connection, collaboration, and community.

“ [My biggest lesson] Leadership and overcoming the fear of speaking. I no longer get nervous when speaking in front of large groups of people, and my self-esteem has also improved because I now have confidence that I can do many things.”
- A reflection from one of our 2025 Global Girl Leadership Initiative alumnae in Bolivia.

Read more reflections on how girls in our programme are building confidence and using their voices to create change in their communities.

In partnership with our local partners, @strongenoughgirls @riseupfoundationnepal24 @skateistan @ayniproject @fondationtoya @milaan_india @laffcharity @swbuganda we support girls to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and take action in their communities. One of the most powerful outcomes is seeing girls begin to recognise their own potential and what they can achieve.

2025 Impact in Numbers

→ 450 graduates equipped with leadership skills
→ 36 community events led by girls
→ 2,050 community members reached
→ 12 locations across our programmes

Behind every number is a girl building confidence, strengthening her leadership, and creating change in her community. We’re proud of what we achieved together in 2025 and excited to reach even more girls and communities in 2026.

At Global Girl Project, we know that meaningful transformation is only possible when it is rooted in strong, equitable partnerships. Working exclusively with trusted local organisations means our programmes grow from the cultures, languages and lived realities of the communities we serve. This approach keeps girls’ experiences at the centre, and recognises that real change begins by working alongside those who know their communities best.

Together, we equip girls from the Global Majority with the tools, confidence and solidarity to realise their leadership potential and step into their power as changemakers.

Our Global Girl Leadership Initiative reaches its final stage when girls design and lead a community event on an issue that matters to them. This year, girls across the world have stepped into their power, showing what leadership looks like in real time.

In Uganda, we work in partnership with @soccerwoborders @swbuganda. The girls at St Paul School chose to focus their event on ending child marriage, questioning why it happens, the harm it causes and the solutions their community can put in place. Their focus came from a clear-eyed understanding that this is still a pressing issue in their area, and that change begins with honest conversation.

Girls leading discussions like these challenges old assumptions and makes space for new possibilities. Their work doesn’t just raise awareness. It shows their community what is possible when girls are trusted to lead.

Since we began our work in 2014, we have mobilised more than 1,500 girls through our programmes. In 2024, we worked with 435 girls aged 13 to 18 who completed our three month, innovative and facilitated leadership course, the Global Girl Leadership Initiative.

The programme created a space where girls began to see themselves as leaders, changemakers and voices for their communities. Delivered in partnership with our well established implementation partners in Haiti, Bolivia, Peru, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Iraq, Jordan, India and Cambodia, it is deeply rooted in the cultures and lived realities of the girls we serve. The programme was facilitated in Haitian Creole, Spanish, Quechua, English, Shona, Hindi, Arabic, Dari and Khmer.

When girls gather in person, the energy is different. It is bold, creative and full of possibility.

In sessions 6 and 7 of our Global Girl Leadership Initiative, more than 200 girls from Haiti, Nigeria, Uganda, Bolivia, India, South Africa, Peru and Nepal strengthened the skills they need to design and lead their community projects.

Session 6 focused on Leadership and Decision Making, helping girls understand how decisions are made, choose their project direction and communicate their ideas with confidence.

Session 7 centred on Project Planning and Teamwork, guiding them to map out project stages, explore team roles, collect simple data and build their first project plans, supported by the Global Graduates Connect platform.

Thank you to all our partner organisations for making this possible.

Each session reminds us that when girls come together with purpose, they turn ideas into action and action into change.

After completing our three-month Global Girl Leadership Initiative, our graduates don’t just move on they move forward. They become part of Global Graduates Connect (GGC), a vibrant international network that keeps them linked, learning, and leading long after the programme ends.

GGC gives them the space to:
→ Stay connected and supported beyond the programme
→ Exchange ideas with girls from across the globe
→ Build new skills and grow as changemakers
→ Take part in future initiatives led by Global Girl Project, our partners, or by the girls themselves

Because leadership doesn’t end at graduation — it evolves, expands, and connects.

At Global Girl Project, we help girls redefine what leadership means. Our programme challenges the belief that leadership belongs only to men or politicians, showing girls that real leadership is about supporting others, not holding power over them.

Through group learning, reflection, and partner discussions, they begin to see leadership as community action, compassion, and courage.

For many of our girls, this is the first time they’re told: “You are already a leader.”

They learn to find and use their voices by listening, speaking, writing, and even using social media as a force for change. The results are transformative. By the time they organise their end-of-programme events, their confidence, creativity, and leadership shine through — proof that when girls redefine leadership, they also reshape their futures.
