Dancer - This work got a chance to be seen last night at the @chicagocenterforartstechnology Black History Month “The Power We Hold A Century of Remembering & Celebrating Black History” gallery.

My work is about how under appreciated black dancers are.
Black dancers are severely misrepresented despite being foundational to nearly every major dance style. From African diasporic traditions carried through enslavement, to tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary black dancers have continuously shaped the language of movement in the United States and beyond. Yet their movement, rhythm, and innovation are often celebrated only after being separated from their black bodies. While black dancers themselves remain underpaid, overlooked, and excluded from recognition and opportunity. Mainstream institutions and media frequently uplift non-black performers who replicate black dance forms, framing them as more marketable or “universal,” while the originators are erased or confined. This pattern reflects a broader system of anti-Blackness in which Black creativity is consumed, commodified, and profited from without meaningful investment in Black artists, communities, or futures. Until Black dancers are credited, compensated, and centered as cultural innovators rather than sources to be mined, the history of dance will continue to be told incompletely and unjustly.
This piece is dedicated to my good friend @lajeune_jade
