🐸AUGUST WRAP-UP🐸

August gave me no more teenagers! After almost 16 years of having teens in the house, my youngest turned 20 last week! Has anything changed? No, not really 🙈

I had a pretty good reading month with a couple of solid 5⭐️ reads 😁 I read 9 books, 5 physical and 4 audio, with only 2 off my shelves (oops!)

🏒Game Changer by Rachel Reid ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🔪The Killer in Room Five by @samhollandbooks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
😂When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between by Ruth Jones and James Corden ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
👩‍🔬No Prisoners by Ellis Blake ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💚Introducing Mrs Collins by Rachel Parris ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
👫The Accidental Girlfriend by Emma Hart ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🐀Pop Goes the Weasel by M.J Arlidge ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
🚗So, I Met This Guy by Alexandra Potter ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
👁Blink of an Eye by Louisa Scarr ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I'm mostly keeping up with my challenges, although no colour palette additions this month, and I'm half way through my IRL book club read (I forgot about it!)

1 x Neglected faithfuls
1 x Non fiction pick n mix
1 x Mother/daughter buddy read

I've started September with Gallant (August IRL book club), The Impossible Fortune with Liz @book_lover_kent and I've just finished listening to First Time Caller 🩷

What is your most anticipated September read? Or do you have anything fun planned?

Me, you ask? Well, I've been talked in to competing in a Deadly Dozen relay later this month.... although not sure how 'fun' it'll be 😂😂

📚NO PRISONERS REVIEW📚

And a NO PRISONERS book stack 😁

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

No Prisoners was a tense, twisty thriller that kept me engaged from start to finish.

The mystery pulled me in straight away, and while I managed to predict a few of the twists, there were plenty of surprises along the way. The pacing builds nicely, although starts a little slowly, giving you just enough time to catch your breath before ramping things up!

I really enjoyed the mix of suspense, emotion, and complex characters. No one felt completely straightforward, which made it even harder to work out what was really going on. Detective Hunt was a great character, and I'd happily read more books with him in them.

Overall, a gripping read with lots of twists and a strong finish.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks @tandemcollectiveglobal for including me in this readalong and @moapress for sending me the book!

Tagging my fellow readalongers if you want to check out their thoughts.

Questions of the day: How many of the stack do you think I've read? And which one am I currently reading? 😁

No Prisoners | Book Review

No Prisoners is the latest novel by Ben Sanders under the pseudonym Ellis Blake. It’s a neo-crime thriller that features anti-heroes and compromised protagonists.

Set just outside Albuquerque in harsh winter conditions, Hannah Lyon is racing against time and law enforcement to find her missing husband, Adam. Adam has already been gone for 5 weeks, and leading Detective Hunt is evading Hannah and shutting down her concerns. Hannah, feeling abandoned, starts her own investigation into Adam’s disappearance, which uncovers dark secrets that implicate him and don’t bode well for her.

This neo-crime genre is somewhat new to me, and I could definitely feel it with the characters’ actions. Hannah kept destroying evidence, thinking she was being helpful, but it ultimately made me want to reach through the pages and give her a shake. Hunt was a dirty cop, but his actions also pushed him into a grey area of likeable as he was doing what he believed was right. It was definitely hard guessing who was the bad guy and who to root for while reading this. I certainly questioned whether Adam was genuinely worth saving.

This is a great read for those who love procedural crime novels and morally grey protagonists. This is not for anyone wanting a hea, as I don’t think anyone from this book deserves one besides maybe Joel.

I was kindly gifted a copy of this book from Moa Press as part of a Tandem Collective readalong. I have tagged some of the lovely people I got to read this with 🩷

🔒THE PRISONERS READALONG🔒

Thanks to @moapress and @tandemcollectiveglobal for the opportunity to take part in the #noprisonersreadalong

I'm only a few pages in, but so far so good!

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A riveting neo-crime thriller in the vein of A Simple Plan, about a brilliant physicist searching for her missing husband, and the beleaguered detective in her way

Hannah Lyon is a brilliant, celebrated physicist, employed by a think tank outside of Albuquerque to question the very nature of how the world works.

And her husband is missing.

But not only is she struggling to cope with his sudden, baffling disappearance, no one believes her when she insists that Adam would never just leave. He was a loving husband, but more than that, a devoted father. He would never leave their young son Joe behind.

Detective Aloysius Hunt assures Hannah they’re doing everything they can to find Adam, but Hannah doesn’t trust him. Lou Hunt has done nothing but stonewall her at every turn.

With no help from the authorities, Hannah is on her own to find Adam and bring him home, but uncovering the truth means revealing dark secrets in her husband’s past, and her own. Secrets better left buried.

When Hannah notices a red SUV stalking her every move, she takes matters into her own hands and sets No Prisoners speeding towards its shocking conclusion.

Twisty, gritty and evocative, No Prisoners by Ellis Blake blends heart-pounding suspense with an emotionally resonant, razor-sharp exploration of grief, set against an unforgiving, icy landscape.

Happy Saturday everyone 🙂

It's wet & miserable this morning so here's a photo of a sunnier day featuring my bookshelves & the slow progress I'm making in filling them....

Good things take time 😂

》》Have you ever taken part in a bookswap? Would you like to? What was your favourite thing about it? (or least favourite 🙃) - tell me all your thoughts 🧐

And thanks to everyone who responded to my stories about this - it looks like many people are on the same page with the 'less is more' vibe, having fun getting to know another reader and supporting their local bookstore - it's what it's all about ☺️

Have a fab day & watch this space for a Bookswap coming soon (hopefully 🫠😂)

Sunday's reading table......slightly chaotic but that's pretty normal for me 😂

Current reads, next reads, and a few (more like A LOT of 🫠) hopeful contenders......I am forever thinking about the next book I want to read which sometimes makes me happy & other times makes me 🤪😂

Which got me wondering.......

》》Has being part of Bookstagram changed the way you read?

Has it helped you discover more books, made you read differently, or do you think your reading habits are pretty much the same as they've always been?

We're certainly not at a loss for recommendations on what to read - or what to not read.......how to read more or less or better.....it's a lot for our brains sometimes 🫣

I'm really curious to hear what you think.

and don't get me started on the tips for how to be a better Bookstagrammer.....a discussion for another day maybe 🫠😂🤣

Have a fabulous day everyone 😘
