Performing or acting confidence I 2022, by Cinthia Sifa Mulanga @cinthia.mulanga

"My work explores beauty constructs through my lived experience as an African woman and those around me. I create moments within domestic spaces by using different mediums like acrylic with oil paint, charcoal, ink, and collage from personal photographs and magazines. Female silhouettes represent the "perfect women " perceived by society through social media. The moments I create in domestic spaces are dialogues between perceived beauty standards and stereotypes which function to both challenge and embrace African women. The Barbie doll, a primary inspiration in my work, is used with other feminine objects or symbols with associations with African women, representing thoughts, misconceptions, perceptions, and emotions. These spaces allow me to create conversations and interrogate notions of beauty." … Cinthia Sifa Mulanga

Her Little Closet 2021, by Cinthia Sifa Mulanga @cinthia.mulanga

Cinthia Sifa Mulanga is a DRC born artist whose practice is deeply rooted in her experiences growing up in South Africa. Working mainly in painting and collage - mediums that have come to define her practice, serving a dual interest in engaging with the history of western art and popular culture thus delving into African art. Mulanga’s practice focuses on the representation of Black women. Through their depiction, she looks to engage with different personas, emotions, or states of mind.

Through her practice, Mulanga juxtaposes several different women in her paintings, thereby highlighting the complexities of female identity, the stream of varying consciousnesses that occupy a single space, identity or moment in time. Representing female bodies within a variety of architectural spaces and contexts, her work operates as multi-perspectival portraits while the spaces allow her to create open conversations and interrogate the notions of beauty. This polyphonic character is amplified through the introduction of additional female subjects via the inclusion of painted or collaged artworks hanging on the walls of the rooms occupied by my subjects.

These images of women, typically sourced from popular culture or the history of western painting, serve as a reminder of how the structures of the female gender and beauty are reinforced and bear down on her subjects. By this, she dialogues with the tradition of western painting, challenging the absence of black female subjects and the representation of women at the hands of male artists; at the same times referencing well-known artworks or those produced by South African contemporaries - serving as tributes to their work, and playful acts of recontextualisation. This referential element is also driven by her own desires, to plot spaces beyond reach or that of viewers. This is further complemented by furniture and decorative pieces in the interiors that evoke aspirational lifestyles advanced by decor magazines.

How to understand contemporary art? ✨

1) A contemporary artwork is not a final product that can be marvelled at for the technical skill of the authors or the beauty they manage to convey. It is more of a space symbolising or referring to an imaginative experience.

2) Works produced by contemporary artists are mostly an attempt of re-imagining, and reinterpreting of a normal everyday world we live in. They always want to change the perspective and make us wonder “why?”

3) Contemporary artists often want to show the process of creating and express their feelings – that’s what makes them different from just a child who pretends to be “doing art”. The child will always want to get a final product – a finished picture depicting something real.
