There’s a joy in translating a piece of art into something people can walk through, touch, and sit inside. That was our task on this show garden, designed by Darren Hawkes: to render the striking, interconnecting architectural structures inspired by the clay sculpture La Casa del Poeta III, by renowned Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida.

The rugged, textured ceramic surface of the original sculpture evokes protection and the nurturing nature of the womb.

Our challenge was to recreate that same rugged ceramic surface at architectural scale, in a material that could stand outdoors and hold its own in the planting. Guy achieved it by working fine charcoal dust into the lime render by hand, building the mottled, weathered texture layer by layer.

Look closely and the walls shift constantly with the light — warm ochre and sienna in full sun, deepening to umber and soot in the coves and undersides, where the render is worked darkest to give real depth to each hollow. Up close, the surface is soft and uneven, almost skin-like, with the same worn, sun-bleached quality as old clay or adobe left to weather for decades. It’s smooth where hands have passed over it, rough and textured where the charcoal has caught, so no two curves ever quite catch the light the same way.

The garden was created for the Lady Garden Foundation, to raise awareness of the gynaecological cancers which claim 21 lives a day in the UK. Silence and stigma delay diagnosis, and this garden was built to help start the conversations that save lives.

We’re proud that Silent No More was awarded a Gold Medal and Best Construction Award @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show 2026.

There are so many talented people and teams who made this garden what it was. To mention a few: @ladygardenfoundation @darrenhawkeslandscapes @lalandscapes @heritagecoblime @tashvdouglas @stucco__design @wheelbarrowlandscapes @rob_bartlett_ @richcurle @captainflava @plantyjane

Managed to get this Iroko bench in despite the rain. Great design from @tommasseyuk and as always excellent metal work from @surreyironcraft. Needs the fire pit in now.

The warmth you see in these walls didn’t happen by accident.

Darren Hawkes asked for surfaces that felt hand-touched - alive with texture, colour and soul. Every curve was rendered to feel sculpted rather than built, with light and shadow doing as much work as the material itself.

These sheltering forms aren’t just beautiful. They created the conditions for something more important: a space where difficult conversations about gynaecological cancers - the very conversations @ladygardenfoundation has fought so hard to normalise - could finally be had. And those conversations don’t end when the show does.

As the team who brought ā€˜Silent No More’ garden to life, Landscape Associates @lalandscapes brought far more than skill to the build. They were supportive and genuinely invested in getting every detail right - the kind of people who make a complex project feel like a shared mission rather than a job.

The warmth and colour you see in these walls owes so much to Sarah at @heritagecoblime. She went out of her way to get the tone exactly as Darren envisioned - a quiet act of dedication that made an enormous difference to the finished garden. A wonderful collaborator and a true expert in her field.

We are incredibly proud of the craft that went into every centimeter. šŸ„‡Gold Medal + Best Construction Award, @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show 2026.

There are so many talented people who made this garden what it was. We are sorry we can’t thank you all by name for your help. But you know who you are - and so do we. Thank you! šŸ™šŸ»
