I AM SO HAPPY, and YOU should be too

Miami-Dade County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program, which was facing extinction, is now funded at the necessary $20 million funds (and then some!) fought for in the FY 2026-27 budget

Holy cow. I cried when I found out.

What an unbelievable effort by hundreds of South Florida residents who fought to protect wild Florida. There were definitely moments when things felt discouraging, but the persistence of people who refuse to let our remaining natural lands disappear into development is a movement that is very much alive.

At the end of the day, I believe it is our civic duty to leave a positive impact on the communities we are part of. So, after being back in Florida for only a couple of days, I knew I had to show up. It didn’t matter how tired I was.

And speaking of tired, I cannot even imagine how exhausted Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins and others were after fighting for additional funding into the early hours of the morning, at these hearings. Thank you to her, and to the Miami-Dade commissioners who supported funding EEL at the level needed for FY 2026-27.

And of course, @miamiwaterkeeper deserves so much credit for helping build and sustain this movement. This was my first time ever making public comment, and I honestly felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I was so nervous going into it, and I know I wasn’t the only one who felt that way

Thank you for equipping ordinary people to show up, speak up, and participate in decisions that shape the place we call home

Wild Florida is worth fighting for 🌴🐊 and never forget: your fight makes a difference! Never give up

Remember to invite your friends!
And if you don’t have any, you’ll be sure to meet amazing people while you’re there (trust me)

Special thank you to Miami-Dade Commissioner Danielle Cohen-Higgins, Commissioner Raquel Regalado, and Mayor Danielle Levine Cava for your inspiring commitment to EEL support and sustainability.

Again, HUGGGE huge shoutout to @miamiwaterkeeper 🙌

It’s hard to imagine EEL getting fully funded for the 2026-27 FY, without your campaigning and community organizing

I am forever grateful for the knowl “Invest In Our Environment” reads on the back of an activists shirt, who is using their 60 second public comment to urge Miami-Dade commissioners to vote YES in support of funding $20 million to the EEL program for the Miami-Dade FY 2026-27
