I Will Always Love you
Every Woman Biennial
La MaMa Galleria
47 Great Jones St, NYC
Opening, 3/2, 1-4pm
Through 3/24

I’ll be performing a new piece on the closing weekend 3/23 and 3/24. More details to come✨

I will be showing my photograph “I feel most genderqueer in a wig cap,” 2021.

In this self portrait, I celebrate the liminal space between gender expressions. This work reveals an intimate savoring of my genderfluid identity through the wearing of a wig cap. I am interested in tools and wearables that have the power to erase or gently modify my appearance, embracing the comfortable in-betweenness they offer.

The pursuit of a fully-realized identity on any spectrum, be it gender or race, can be unsettling. For me, attempts to embody traditional representations of identity often feel performative and artificial. For example, when I wear traditional kimono is when I feel the least Japanese. All of my not-Japanese-looking features as a mixed-race person become heightened and unruly. In everyday life, my femme expression can feel ridiculous and increasingly unsafe, while masculine expression can feel like an impossible daydream.

During transitional moments, my genderfluidity is grounded in a sense of control and authenticity. It is within this in-between space that I savor the rare honesty and sincerity of selfhood, free from the gaze of others and the pressures I place upon myself.

Asking viewers to reflect on their own experiences of navigating the in-between, I invite contemplation on the foundations of their fortresses of identity. Have you found solace in the liminal spaces, and what materials have you used to construct your sense of self?

❤️‍🔥Update🔪 I didn’t cut myself ❤️‍🔥“Infinity Apple” at the @everywomanbiennial closing at @lamamagalleria -
Deep thank you to all the folks who came out to view this new work. I cherish your presence.

This performance was both emotional and comforting. I played my mom’s favorite songs low in the background.

It was Dusty Springfield’s “You don’t have to say you love me” that got me in my feelings. It encapsulated the performance- words are not the only or the most important form of love.

Many of us with Asian immigrant parents did not grow up with “I love you” but gestures just as beautiful and meaningful.

As I cut through the fruit I remembered this wordless and very Asian expression of love.

Springfield’s lyrics “ You don’t have to stay forever, I will understand” made me contemplate how our mothers and loved ones eventually leave us in death. That we must understand this part of life and let them go as a form of love. For them and ourselves.

Infinity Apple

1. Peel an apple in one go. Once, all the way around in a seamless spiral.

2. Listen to the sound and texture.

3. Contemplate your mother.

4. Contemplate fruit as a love language.

5. Contemplate the beginning, middle and end.

6. Contemplate spirals.

7. Contemplate your/her infinite love.

8. Contemplate the inevitable end.

9. If the spiral breaks, it is still infinite, try again.

10. Remember the kitchen, remember her music, remember her hands and make them yours.
