We’re excited to share Jay Lamar’s review of beloved Alabama writer Fannie Flagg's #SomethingToLookForwardTo, published today by @randomhouse. Happy pub day! ✨

“What unifies [these stories] is Flagg’s deep and positive faith in humanity. Hers is a world in which mistakes can be redeemed, youth and indiscretion are forgiven, and the wicked get their just rewards.”

Join us in the yard at Standard Deluxe this Sunday for our first outdoor show of the year — Mary Gauthier with Jaimee Harris!

Tickets and info: standarddeluxe.com

Sunday, March 23
Doors 5pm, Music 7:30pm
Wilton’s Catering in the Feed Shak

Mary Gauthier is a Grammy-nominated American folk singer-songwriter and author. Her songs often deal with marginalization, informed by her experience of adoption, addiction and recovery, and growing up gay in the South. Her work demonstrates an "ability to transform her own trauma into a purposeful and communal narrative,” such as the lyric "we could all use, a little mercy, now.”

Her Grammy nominated 2018 album Rifles & Rosary Beads, co-written with military veterans and their families, has been hailed as a landmark achievement.

An inspiring Friday morning session at the Monroeville Literary Festival with authors Tim Lockette, Angela Jackson-Brown, Jennifer Horne, and Jay Lamar. The full courthouse was buzzing with excitement and energy! #MonroevilleLitFest2025

The Festival is excited to welcome three remarkable women on today Friday, Feb. 28, to discuss Old Enough, Southern Women Artists and Writers on Creativity and Aging, a collection of essays on how women artists and writers of a certain age defy expectations to sustain their creativity. Co-editors (and Festival favorites) Jay Lamar and Jennifer Horne are joined by Angela Jackson-Brown to discuss the collection of 21 essays. This brilliant group of women don’t hold back. They are frank about how notions of female aging can be restrictive and diminishing. But in lyrical, sometimes amusing, often inspiring essays they explore what growing older can offer: self-knowledge, insight and acceptance. The book includes striking portraits (like the three included here) by award-winning photographer Carolyn Sherer to accompany each essay.
