Last month’s deadly attack at Berlin Pride, and Monday’s shooting at a gay bar in Tucson, Arizona, are reminders that the fight for equity, justice, and safety knows no borders. In the nearly 15 years I’ve worked in LGBTQ+ advocacy, we’ve made meaningful progress, but we are still facing new threats and ongoing violence.

I shared my thoughts on this moment and reflected on my time in the American-German Institute (@amgerinst)’s “Building LGBTQ+ Communities in Germany and the United States” exchange program.

Kind of chic to do what you came here to do… dance, love, hustle, repeat.

Forever grateful to wake up in a city I love, doing work I care deeply about, surrounded by the most peculiar and extraordinary people.

Reminder for myself: Build a life that feels like yours and be grateful enough to notice how lucky you are while you’re living it.

For the last two years I’ve wanted to walk with the 50 foot Trans flag in the parade.

And for the last over 5 years, I’ve been working the festival and unable to do both.

During that time I have given all of me and more to this beautiful queer community of mine.

Sometimes beyond what I could sustain. Somehow able to dig deeper and keep going when others couldn’t.

This year, Pride looked different for me.

Candice and I made the difficult decision to withdraw from working the festival, and march and rest instead.

I can’t describe the feeling of marching with @lambdaarchives and @trans.diego with the 50 foot Trans flag.

At one point I noticed a Trans man wearing a rainbow shirt that said “human.” as he first realized a group of Trans men and allies were carrying the flag.

I could feel how much that visibility mattered to him.

The pure joy on his face is something I’ll carry with me a long while.

In that moment I knew we had made the best choice for where to be.

At the same time, I’ve also been feeling an immense amount of grief and loneliness as I detangle who I am from what I do.

Taking a rest from working felt like the right choice, and also empty at the same time.

Seeing so many of my friends post selfies at bars and pool parties throughout the weekend was unexpectedly hard.

Even they have grow accustomed to me working.

When people learn your habits, sometimes they stop inviting you.

All of this has made me more aware of my desire to be included and to feel like I belong. Without having to provide a service in exchange.

All of this I recognize as part of the process in becoming the man I want to be.

Pride is shiny and bright and full of joy.

And Pride is also a protest. A fight. A plea.

Right now, that plea is with myself, to allow me to simply exist. That I matter.

However you spent Pride, know your existence matters.

Happy Pride ❤️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

THE LAVENDER NAMES PROJECT 💜

San Diego local Thomas T. Carpenter, Esq. will be joining us in the audience at tonight’s closing performance of Fellow Travelers at @sandiegoopera. A Marine Corps Captain and A‑4 Skyhawk pilot, he served from 1970–1976 and in the Reserves until 1982 while forced to conceal his sexual orientation.

More than twenty years later, he helped lead the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” drafting influential white papers, volunteering countless hours, and collaborating with 70 veterans on the implementation plan that shaped the 2010 repeal. He co‑chaired the Forum on the Military Chaplaincy, served on the board of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), helped found OutServe in 2010, and supported its merger with SLDN in 2012.

A Naval Academy and Golden Gate Law graduate, he’s received multiple awards, including OutServe‑SLDN’s Anna S. Curren Service Award. He credits his husband, Art Andrade, for steadfast support. Tom retired and moved to San Diego in 2015.
