The Murcielago might be the perfect middle ground between old-school Lamborghini and the modern era. Development started before Audi took over in 1998, so the car still carried plenty of the Diablo’s DNA when it arrived in 2001. But Audi’s influence showed in the details, with better build quality, more consistent engineering and a cabin that felt less like an afterthought. Designed by Luc Donckerwolke, its huge side intakes, exposed V12 and sharp, angular bodywork gave it a character that later Lamborghinis gradually moved away from. Even the original 6.2-liter V12, producing 580 hp, stuck to the old formula of a big naturally aspirated engine, a manual gearbox and all-wheel drive. The Murcielago was never as raw as a Countach, nor as polished as the Aventador that replaced it. It sits between the Countach-era wildness and the more refined supercars that followed, with just enough of both to make it stand out.
